I bought my 94 spec miata 3 years ago to use for track days and time trials, and now it's finally time to change the front brake pads after a lot of track time. After searching for over an hour, I cannae come up with what was on the car when I bought it.
Here's a picture from the front:
It looks like it says:
17 GS
NRS
XD-635
From what I can tell, D-635 is "The size" of Miata front brakes, so I'm not sure how helpful that is. Searching for 17 GS gives me a bunch of buick results.
Anyone know?
Thanks!
EBC "Green Stuff"? I'm just doing free association with brake pad theme...
Looks like the "NRS" could be explained by EBC using the Nucap Retention System... or, uh, by the brand of brake pads named NRS... Which also appears to use the Nucap system, though not be related (Nucap appears to be a brand who licenses that technology to a bunch of pad manufacturers)?
Guessing, as close as I felt to sleuthy for a moment, someone with a set of those pads in a drawer in their shop is going to be able to give you a real answer...

NRS is a manufacturer I'm pretty sure.
On the NRS Brake site, a D635 pad fits a 1995 Miata front - for whatever that is worth
https://nrsbrakes.com/product/d635-front-brake-pads/
I was looking at the NRS website, but I couldn't find any references to XD-635, though.
That's the problem I was running into, I could pattern match want individual line from the pads, but not 2 or 3 at once :)
My google-foo isn't great but found this site. XD635 brake pads Doesn't have the dash though. Seems as though they may be stock pads. I know the Miata without ABS the trick is stock pads on the front and more aggressive track pads on the back to help balance the front brake bias.
Thanks for that. I can't find any cross references for XD635 with the XD-635 as you mentioned, and nothing with that and NRS or 17 GS... And I haven't had the brakes fade, either, which it looks like the KEMPARTS XD635s are like $20 for a set of fronts, I can't imagine that I'm that easy on brakes, right?
Yearly update!
I just(as in right now!) Figured this out.
I'm replacing a set of hawk blacks that I put in last April with a set of hawk blues, and check out the markings!
They both have the NRS stamp! The black is labeled 14 JZ, the blues are 18 BA.
So now I'm going to check with hawk and see what the original ones were.
I'm going to guess the 635 is just dealing with the metal backing plates shape.

Yeah, I mentioned up thread somewhere (and someone else probably did too) that XD-635 is the pad shape for a miata.
