I did it with the valve cover off. Maybe that will help?

Problem solved, feel free to disregard.
My system for lining up the CAS tangs did work. I was just underestimating the amount to force it would take to push it in with the new O-ring. Turns out I'd probably gotten it lined up 10 times already, and hadn't realized it.
Note: For those people who will be replacing the CAS O-ring on their Miata, lining up the tangs properly is about as difficult as most write-ups make it sounds. What was difficult for me was feeling when they were lined up.
The feel is only slightly different when you do line the tangs up. It will probably take more pressure to push the sensor in past the new o-ring than you expect.
Thats good to know. I will be doing that job soon myself.
What happend to the original post, for some reason I can't see it anymore...
did you remember to lube up the O-ring after getting it on the CAS? a bit of oil there will help it slide into place. You could also loosen the bolts on the cap over the CAS journal, just don't forget to torque them down when you're done.

I deleted it, thinking it would just get rid of this thread. No luck.
The gist of the original post was, "Please help, I've been trying to get these tangs to line up for an hour. Is there a better method than guessing and making small adjustments?"
