I recently converted my pickup to power steering. There were some minor hiccups during the install which necessitated me buying new tools to overcome the issues, which is always nice. Except for on fitting on one of the power steering lines. That fitting is seized to the metal power steering line. It threads into the steering box just fine but it takes the line with it. The problem is I can't tighten that fitting and have a massive leak there. I've tried a box wrench (bad idea), a flare wrench (better idea), swearing, copious amounts of PB blaster, and the heat wrench. Nothing has worked, the fitting remains stuck to the line. I tried icing the line after getting the fitting nice and hot and still nothing.. My flare wrench is from harbor freight and it starts to flex when I try to muscle the line loose. Is the root of my problem or does it even matter at this point? My last resort here is to just cut the fitting off and then hammer the offending bit of line out and then reinstall the fitting on the new end of the line. Who can give me a nice hint to break this sucker loose?

Have I truly stumped the ENTIRE GRM community? If so, I will be expecting my prize in the mail soon.

Flexy wrenches don't help. I bought some off brands at PepZone, the first flare fitting nearly rounded off. I returned them forthwith and dropped some coin on a set of Craftsmans (not their cheapie Companion line). Nary another problem.

Hard to believe the cherry red wrench didn't help, though.

I can't tell from your first post if you're removing the hose/nut, or installing it.

Is the nut supposed to be seperate from the line? Can you spin it when the hose isn't installed? If not, take it all apart and get to this point first.

I had a similar situation many years ago, though, when installing a PS line. I bought a short piece of tubing from the parts store, cut off the nut, and hacksawed a slot across the threads (like a tap). Then I threaded this nut seperately into the pump, which cleaned the threads enough to allow the line to be installed.

This project ended in utter failure. I cut the fitting off the line to attempt to hammer the offending bit of line out. I then realized that the end of the line wasn't long enough to get the fitting back on and flare. So now its off to buy a new line.
