Trying to think of all the cars that were built for the purpose of satisfying a homologation requirement, but release to the general public for purchase and registered for the street. Extra points if they still fall into the "affordable" category. Here's a few off the top of my head to get started.
323 GTX
E30 M3
190e 2.3 16v Cosworth
Lancia Integrale
924 Carrera GT
Quattro S1
RS200
I like mine from the east, as in far east.

Also I'm told by the internet this happened:
I can't imagine the stones it would take to drive a 917 on the street today. Photo credited is reputed to be Car and Driver.
Fun fact: John Wyer's racing teams (such as Aston Martin and Gulf) used to drive their cars to the Le Mans track from the chateau they used as a base of operations. Until they started racing 917s. Then they discovered that the 917s would foul the spark plugs. A 917 has 24 spark plugs. And you have to remove the 12 cylinder exhaust system to get to them.
No more driving to the track.
In reply to Keith Tanner:
The...hell...is that craziness? I would hate to be the guy to change the plugs on that car.
Alfa Romeo GTA and GTA Jr.
A friend has a street version of the GTA Jr- those of you who autocross in Detroit have seen this car driven.
