I wonder how big of a difference there is...

edit: Not as much as I thought

I do get some slight pinging under load in just about any gear so maybe premium is on the list?

My general attitude towards my old 1.5L CRX HF (which pinged constantly under load) was it didn't make enough power to hurt itself, so why should i care? And you know what? It didn't hurt itself.

As for old cars getting good mpgs, i've been in the position of owning and driving two of the poster children of mpg cars at the same time, the 1g CRX HF and the 1g Insight. I can tell you that, even looking back on the insight technology being over 15 years old at this point, the newer car is MASSIVELY better at almost everything, including mpg, acceleration, and top speed. About the only thing it didn't do better was hold large amounts of stuff, as the aero and battery pack dictated a smaller cargo area. The actual driving space was much more comfortable for large people, though.

I still have 2 insights and a 1g crx, but this one is an auto with a weber swap and no fuel tuning so it only gets 29mpg.

Nice find! Here's an interesting article regarding CVCC for those not familiar with it, also some other good articles on CVCC and how it works on the same page:

Honda introduced the CVCC-engined Civic in 1973 and that same summer licensed the technology to both Ford and Chrysler, among other auto manufacturers. General Motors apparently passed on licensing it, and according to a recent recollection by G Duncan at Japanese Nostalgic Car, GM’s then-chairman and CEO, Richard C. Gerstenberg, dismissed the technology as appropriate only for “some little toy motorcycle engine… I see no potential for it on one of our GM car engines.” As Duncan wrote:

When Mr. Honda heard this, he bought a 1973 V8 Impala, air-freighted it to Japan, designed and cast a set of CVCC heads for the Chevy engine, tested it in our own emission labs, then flew the car back to the EPA’s facility in Ann Arbor, and had it tested by them… where it passed the stringent 1975 emissions requirements. Exactly how involved Soichiro Honda was in the project remains unclear, but the company did indeed obtain at least one 1973 Chevrolet Impala and replace its cylinder heads, intake manifold, and carburetor with specially modified versions that incorporated CVCC prechambers. As has been related several times since then, the Impala, when tested by the EPA with the modified cylinder heads, went on to not only meet the federal emissions standards without the help of a catalytic converter, but also improve on the Impala’s fuel economy.

At 188,917 miles I am 66 miles away from my 500mi tank goal. I have about an eighth of a tank left (as read on the gauge).

Unfortunately I'm leaving for a month

Awesome, maybe I need to go this route with my new DD. Vintage, but practical and economical. Nice find!

12 miles to go and the needle is below the red "E" line. I may be walking home from work today.

In preparation I threw a gas can in the trunk before I left for work, unfortunately the can is empty.

Along time coming but you can now purchase a car that is EPA rated at 45mpg highway and can easily reach 50mpg. It has 123hp, good torque and is not a hybrid or diesel. It comes only with a 5sp manual. I has seats for 4 passengers,5 if they are small. OK, it is not cheap by GRM standards.

Made it!

I put gas in the tank today after work, and the odometer read 188984. That's 501 miles on one tank of gas!

Unfortunately I only had $40 in the wallet so I didn't get an accurate fuel consumption reading. I put in 10.5 gallons and the needle reads "full" but I bet there's at least a gallon or so more I could fit in.

(I estimate between 42-43 mpg)

Next goal: 50mpg one tank average.

which car … I'm aware of Chevy Cruze owners that in mixed driving are routinely getting mid 40's and on trips are getting low 50's

Had an 2007 Audi A4 wagon. 2.0 TDI with the 7-spd tiptronic that averaged 45mpg without batting an eye. Went on an economy run to Budapest once and got just over 50mpg.

Never imported to the states in that configuration, as I understand.

I had an 09 Yaris for a year or two and I averaged around 40 mpg routinely in that and hit 43-44 mpg on a couple road trips.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry to report that I killed the grey hag today.

My coolant gauge never worked. A long up-slope up I-5 brought to light what sounded like constant pre-ignition knock. I ignored it at first, but then picked up the hint of power loss. A downshift and WOT verified my suspicions. She'd been overheated.

Luckily my brother lives at the exit where he gave up the ghost so we tugged her to his lawn. I haven't gone back to try to start her yet, but I'm pretty sure she's dun-fer. I have no desire to perform CPR.

Currently looking at Seattle craigslist for a replacement. The current leader is http://bellingham.craigslist.org/cto/4864727917.html

(I blame myself for never checking the coolant. I knew better)

If it was something super rare you'd broken i'd be annoyed, but what you just described is basically the way i get old broken stuff for nearly free. Somebody has to break old stuff or it'd hold value and then i wouldn't be able to buy tons of it with absolutely no justification and not go broke!

Caffine: She's at my brother's house in Seattle if you're up to the task. I've already got one Honda engine swap under my belt, it was enough that I never ever ever ever want to attempt another.

I spent the weekend dragging the wife from vehicle to vehicle until she eventually had enough (and truthfully, so did I). There was nothing but crap listed, and people wanted a lot for it. Half the ads had sold but weren't removed. Anyhoo...

I got a free mustang a while back with the intention of fixing it and giving it to my brother. We gave him a call and offered to go halfsies on a $3000 Datsun pickup with 240sx engine. (really cool pickup). He took the bait and soon I'll be driving a "once free, now $1500 Y2K V6 Mustang".

Just as soon as I fix this window regulator, exhaust leak, and CEL.

There are a few things you can do to help the MPG of the Mustang. I could get 29 MPG highway running Ethanol free gas, but even with a grill block, front belly pan and a wing delete I could barely get 28. If you can run E0 it will really help.

A 2000-ish 3.8 mustang is a completely non-optimized vehicle. It doesnt have the best of anything of its era and seemingly wasnt designed to be good at any particular thing, certainly not mpg.

Having said that, free sounds like a pretty good deal.
