Lexus SC300? Cheaper and easier to find than the IS300...
Already V8 powered (and it is a fairly nice one at that) and aside from potential transmission issues tends to just keep on going in ways that Mercedes and BMW's of the late nineties to now just can't it seems.
Nope, the SC400 is V8 powered. The SC300 is very similar mechanically to the IS300, including its I6.
He was pointing out that the SC chassis already had a good v8 available.....and around me, its easier to find ragged out is300's than non-FUBAR'd sc300's for something resembling reasonable.

Oh. Whoops! I stand corrected. Sorry about that folks ;)

To the OP, do you actually HAVE the LS1? Did you get a T56 with it? What is it out of? How much are you willing to spend to get the whole thing done? Does the end result have to be 6-speed manual, or is automatic ok? Those will help narrow things down.

As the title clearly says,I has LS1.
Engine + 4L60E out of a 98 Z28
Sub $10,000 goal, cheaper the better
6spd is preferable, though auto is fine too
Really like the is300 idea, though donors seem expensive, and it already has a JZ variant. Seems a shame to rip that out
I'm shocked and a little saddened no one has mentioned e30 yet. No kit for it?
My List for CTS-V replacement is
1) 944
2) E36
3) IS300
4) RX8

Why? E36's are cheap enough now......I think its a "Better base to start with" type of thing. E30's still look better though.
An E36 will put the power down much better, and you can fit more tire on it.
I'm digging the Catera idea. Heck, that would be a good one for GRM to cover, especially if it's mostly a parts bin special.

Alright, so I've narrowed it down to either E36 or 944. Just can't get behind the looks of a Catera.
If you want it to be a CTS-V replacement, that would seem to say E36 over 944. Try driving the M3 before you rip the engine out of an E36, you may just sell the LS1 instead :)
I don't understand the IS300 or SC300 suggestions, unless you happen to find one with a blown motor very cheap. They are expensive cars, and assuming the engine runs, its pretty damn cheap to extract a LOT of extra power from the motor that's already in them.
I am very interested to learn what it takes to do the Catera swap. If it truly is a parts bin special, that's pretty awesome.
It needs to go in here, then you need to add a pair of magic snails to make it match the name.
