Actually, I'd look for an RS America . . .

Mine is likely to be for sale shortly if anyone is interested and not put off by an $18k price tag (cheaper if you want to fix the heater blower motor yourself!) 4 new tires, tie rods, boots, oil cooler, plugs, filter and 12qts of Mobil 1 put in last week... I was just getting to the blower, and some interior rattles that have been bugging me all summer.... but I need $ to put an S54 in my race car. Trade me the Miata as a DD replacement and it gets even more affordable.

How about you just straight up trade me that for my MSM?

So awesome, though. And if you have the means, that's pretty reasonable. I bet there are a lot of other supercars that would cost more per 7200miles of track time.

If it were me in your shoes, it'd be a tough battle between a Cayman R, the 996 GT3, and a well built long hood car. Chances are, I'd probably send a down payment to Chuck Beck for a 904 replica...

Why? It's rare, but not particularly fun. Its just a C2 with no a/c and manual steering rack.

Plus all that immense weight savings from switching from cardboard backed vinyl to aluminum door liners. I think they RS decals probably put all the weight back though

DO wish the manual rack was cheap though - I'd like to swap the C2 over but damn if $1000 for a steering rack ain't foolish.

That. I would have a hard time spending that to keep a car happy. Would it be that much more fun than a cheaper to operate option? And that assumes >>zero<< depreciation, which, to be fair, was his experience.

The Cayman R is a nifty idea, but if you need air and a radio for the street (you may not), you've already negated a big part of the weight savings.

Besides, do you really want to live with aluminum doors in the parking lots of your life?

They're rather expensive and I basically don't like the looks of them. If I'm going ac 911 I want the classic shape.

The 996 isn't exactly stunningly beautiful either, but I'd be willing to overlook that for "cheap" performance.

ZOO wrote: GT3 > 996 TT Actually, I'd look for an RS America . . .

Actually, I am keeping an eye out for one, but so far I've only found highly modded track cars (which I don't want).

I love them. I think they are super-attractive (the 996s are quite dull looking), they sound brilliant, and like a GT3 I suspect they will continue to have long-term value.

This caught my eye, too.

oldtin wrote: All the a/c 911s are heading up the value curve. 996 variations may still be on the slide. Getting the cash back on these may be a multi-year proposition - maybe longer if you're financing. Getting your money back on an a/c version could be done in a week. Personally, I have two thoughts - I'm intrigued at picking up a 74-77 as the last of the cheap a/c versions. The other thought is the 964. A flat bargain compared to a 993 and it is a step up over the previous 911s in brakes, suspension and transmission. Mrs. Oldtin calls the 996/997s fat man cars. There's also a difference in feel - 996s have a mass produced feel - 993 and older have more of the hand-built feel. Then again, if you want to go pretty fast and have less of the old school 911 quirks the 996s will do that.

I don't need to go pretty fast , although I like a car that feels fast. Handling > outright speed for me. I don't mind the old school quirks too much either, in fact they're part of the charm at the end of the day. Mind you, we drove a 964 C4 and while I liked it, I was missing some of the "rawer" feel of the earlier cars and I can see this being an even bigger problem with a 996.

The longer I think about it and brood over the running costs of the GT3 - no, I can't afford 5 bucks a mile - the more I'm tending towards going with the devil I know, which means aircooled or if I feel really like I need to scare myself, 930.

I was just about to pull the trigger on a 996 GT3 until I drove my friends GT3. While you could daily drive one, they're just not that great as a daily driver. Clutch effort is very high and the ride is, well, crappy.

If it's going to mostly be a track car, they're awesome. They dipped in value 3-4 years ago, but have bounced back up, most are in the $50k range.

Contrast that to a 996tt that you can buy in the mid $30k's, make a ton of fun street power, can be daily driven and with a set of snow tires are great winter cars, ground clearance excepting.

I'd either go with a 996tt or a 964.

you can convert a Carrera into a longhood look alike easily enough... hood, bumpers, lights, and a little bit of metal work to make the fenders meet up with the bumpers...

best of both worlds.. old style looks with newer performance

TBH I don't mind the looks of the impact bumper, after all I've had one before. I might consider replacing the bumpers with FG or CF items, though .

Tim if anybody else has not said this, why not a C2S 997. Same money, faster then a 996 GT3, worlds better fit and finish. Plus easy to use as a DD or track weapon. If your in the snow a 997s4 might be a bit over price.

I'd get the GT3 if I could just because. If I ended up hating it then I'd at least be able to tell people about how I hated owning a GT3.
On the other hand, I do believe that I'm going to show my wife GPS's car tonight and judge her reaction.

The only reason that the 996 even made the list was the availability of the turbo and GT3 in vague shouting distance of my budget . I'm not really that keen on the newer 911s over the old aircooled ones, but the possibility of getting the automotive equivalent of an ICBM for very reasonable money potentially makes me ignore my dislike.

Snow? You mean that white stuff piling up outside? The office I work in is a five minute walk from the shore of Lake Tahoe. We get the odd snow flurry here .

The problem with the "hating the GT3" part is that if that would happen, I would get stuck with a car that I don't like, but still have to make a few years' payments on. I would consider that a fairly unpleasant situation.
