no seasons are a joke. I have to thank getting into rallycross to prompt me to buy snow tires, then once I actually used them in snow opposed to dirt there was no turning back. I now look forward to enough snow to shut everything down and search out untreated and unplowed roads and trails.
can be a joke, but I like the ones on my new Fiesta right now.

I pulled a young girl out of a ditch once, she got sucked in by slush on the side of the road. She was in the car, cop sat on the other side of the road.
Once I got her out I suggested snow tires.
"Oh, I don't need them, I've got all-seasons"
Cop just shrugged and laughed.
the actual name for all seasons is "no season" .. since they don't do anything REALLY well
The present snow/ice tire ie: Blizzaks etc. should be called winter tires because the tread compound stays pliable in very cold temps. Unlike the AS tires.
I have Goodyear DuraTracs on my Wrangler. They are 33x12.5x15. Apparently they are studdable. I did not know that when I bought them. I am moving to the great state of Idaho in September (coming from central Florida). The 33's are beginning to look small. I'm seriously thinking about upgrading to some 35s and relegating the 33s to snow tire duty. How hard is it to stud tires? Is it expensive to have a shop do it? Would it be worth it in the end? The Jeep does great off road but with a short wheelbase and an open differential, I'm kinda worried about the snow/ice performance.

What kind of weather do they get in Idaho? Studs mainly help with ice. Big, open treads work in snow with pliable rubber. Be careful most AT tires or MT Tires are NOT winter rated. The tread goes as hard as a rock in the cold.

I have all seasons on my CRX and it is literally unstoppable. That thing will go anywhere.
People always say its all about weight in the snow, but I think they're all crazy. You only need enough weight to keep the tire contacting the ground firmly. After that, the more weight you add, the harder it is to get it moving.
An object at rest wants to stay at rest. I think the light little CRX just has the perfect weight for the grip given. I can only imagine how beast it would be with snow tires, but I havent needed them yet.
My feelings as well. I owned 2 different Ford Festas back in the 80's and even with stock tires (Size 155/70X12) I got around fine. And another benefit was if you ever stuffed that car into a snow bank it was never going to be stuck so bad that you couldn't get it out. A big heavy car is going to go in deeper simply because it has more mass.

snow tires may make it stoppable.
I always say - 4 wheel drive gets you going, but snow tires let you steer and stop.
No, my wifes old Audi A4 with snow tires was incredible.
I picked up some used snows for my Mini - $425 mounted. They are the best investment when living in Northern Ohio.

Lol true, unstoppable could be bad in this context. I do imagine performance would be significantly better with Snow tires on there. Already I am bumping the E-brake alot just to get the thing to turn, but as far as getting stuck, thats not a problem.
just put the snows on the Disco... now there will be no snow for the rest of the winter
I'd love to try snows but in VA, outside of the northern VA and DC, we don't really get enough to warrant the purchase. Unless you're in a RWD car in which case they'll help you get around if we anything over 5 inches.

On average, it snows about 20in a year there. They don't get a lot of precip since its basically high desert. But they do get ice from the melt/refreeze cycle. It gets pretty cold - down to around 0-10°F. The tire has the Severe Weather Rating on the sidewall.
General Arctimax work great on the RX-8, I can out accelerate most 4x4s on snow

Well studs will probably work then.
I haven't studded a tire, but I have de-studded one! I find the studs create weird droning on the highway but that was on a passenger car tire. Chances are your 33's will already be noisy.

Anyone who says that all seasons are good enough, have never used real snow tires. I used to think the same thing about all seasons until I bought a set of cheap Canadian Tire Nordics about 12 years ago. Now all of our winter use vehicles have them on dedicated winter rims.
I am going to quote myself and then add this . . .
A good set of winters is cheaper than almost any collision damage!
Believe me, if you live wear it gets below 7 degrees C (45F) , then its is a proven fact that winter tires are superior in traction to all seasons. Regardless of snow or ice.
