I would love to see data on touch controls vs. buttons on how long the driver typically looks.

This thread got me thinking, so I paid attention to what I was doing while driving home.

Steering wheel, shift lever, turn signal stalk, wiper stalk, brake and accelerator pedals, all controlled by feel alone without having to look.

Radio volume knob, HVAC fan speed and temperature knobs, I can operate by resting my wrist on the shifter and letting muscle memory do the rest.

Other buttons, like seat heater, rear defrost, traction control on/off, stereo track forward and back one track or one folder (four separate buttons), I'll glance down to where it is long enough to put my finger on it.  Then, I can push the button and get tactile feedback that I did something without having to keep looking.  This laying the finger on is key because in a moving car that is constantly being bumped around, it keeps you from hitting the wrong button.

More complicated contols with context-sensitive controls like stereo functions that require scrolling through menus, I do with the car stopped.

I do berking hate touchscreens because there is no feedback.  My phone has buttons and a QWERTY keyboard!
