My wife works at a high school, and has a student that drives a 72 International Scout. He is 16, and his older brother drove it through high school until graduating last year and going to West Point, leaving it at home for the next sibling to drive (it was a family project). Props to the young man, as it not only doesn't have A/C it also doesn't have heat. "I drive it to school with gloves, coat, and hat when its cold - and use a towel to wipe off the windshield when my breath fogs it up". This is a private high school, in which the student parking lot is filled with new SUV's, Raptors, Luxo Sedans, Crew Cabs, Wranglers, etc. There are very few old cars or trucks. Most of the classmates have never seen crank windows. Good to see someone young not afraid to drive something without a computer and all the electronic comforts, but cool. Single stage paint, bed liner in the box and on the floor boards. Stock 304 with electronic ignition added. Lifted a couple of inches.

I got to ride around in the Scout for about an hour last week. What a blast. I grew up with a group of cousins that all had Scouts, with an uncle who owned an International dealership in MN. My aunt always had the "nice" ones. Grandpa had an old International Pickup on his WI farm. My birthday was last week, so my wife asked him if he'd drive me around for a tank of gas.

Anyone else have a soft spot for the Internationals on the board?

I love them. I might get one eventually...

Or a Land Cruiser. Or a Grand Wagoneer. Or a Samurai. Or an original Bronco.

Maybe I have a problem.

I'm kind of partial to all the old SUVs. They do exactly what they were designed for and nothing more. Simple, the older I get the more I like simple. That might be why I bought a Samurai.

Love them!

I had a 1979 Super Scout and a 1956 S-120 pickup.

A couple friends had them in high school. I personally like the FSJ's more than the scouts but I learned to drive on a plymouth trail duster so I just like the big SUV's in general till I have to put gas in it. haha

Yamaha has an old stake truck.

I grew up with them and lost my Grandpas '69 1300C dump truck to my uncle scrapping everything on my grandmas farm.

I have both a '40 D30 pickup and a '68 Cabover 1600 straight truck, but I really want an early Scout with a pickup cab for the winter and a folding windshield for the summer.

My buddy who built the bikes for an endurance racing team for which I was privileged to ride in the 80's rebuilt the V-8 in an old Scout and used it to tow a heavy trailer some pretty hefty distances. He used to say how he loved putting the throttle about 2/3 down going up long hills at 65-70 and listening to the engine "talk." Woppa-woppa. Very strong little truck.

I had a '74 Scout II back in the day. Six cylinder, four speed, locking hubs and a genuine shifter on the transfer case. No automatic electronic push button crap.

Seems rust was a bit of a problem and finding a nice one is tough.

don't suppose your cousins lived in Waverly, MN, did they? there was one family there that didn't drive anything but Internationals.. Larson was their last name, i believe..

I like the old 4x4s. Geowing up my dad had a 76 Jimmy with a 2 in lift and 33x12.50s on it I loved that truck. Hate broncos though

I spent my a number of years in the AZ desert. We moved there in 1968. My dad bought a new International Travelall. We went all over the mountains and deserts exploring with that thing. It was a manual with a very low range four wheel drive. My dad but a dual exhaust with glass pack mufflers on it. He use to love to coast down hills and just listen to the rumble of the exhaust.

I caught the 4 wheel drive bug and had a number of Jeeps, Broncos, and Toyota Land Cruisers. I even had 2 old M37 Military weapons carriers. I drove one of them during my junior and senior years of high school. Great memories.

My dad had a 79 scout with a 345, 4 speed, 3.73 rear end that he used as a 3/4 ton truck. Went through a few rear ends but it towed amazingly well, super torquey. It got handed down to me, then my cousin, when he finally sold it, it had 340k miles, never had the valve covers off. Compression tested like it was new, but power was way down by then, guessing the cam was round.

Had a 77 scout in college. My first engine rebuild, my first solid axel rebuild, my first real bodywork effort. I gave it a soft top, a lift, 32 inch tires. And an ss grill. still hate myself sometimes for parting with it. The most fun vehicle I have ever had.

Hard to beat two Dana 44's, TF 727 (NP or T18 manual?) and a heavy old 304 or 345.

Tractor Supply has metal scale models toys of the Scout II... The hood even opens the correct way!

I learn off roading/mudding with my buddy around miami, he had a 79 scout with a spring over, 38 super swampers, detroit in the back, tru-trac in the front and ramsey we winch. I had a 79 gmc jimmy with 4inch lift, 35/15 swampers and a warn 8274.

Mine almost felt luxurious compared to his, but he would go through 4 feet of muck until he either got stuck our broke. We changed many a dana 44 knuckle u-joint. He also drove it with hand controls and made that 304 sing.

My k5 was no slouch and surprised many.

Good times

In reply to SyntheticBlinkerFluid:

Indeed I do, its been on the agenda to fix it up, but its been a bit too useful to work on restoring it. Right now it has some seed stored on it(4 proboxes of beans) and in a month or so, it'll be on old shingle removal duty.

My heat works, although the truck doesn't have a defroster.

Based upon the 1960 Cornbinder I drove in high school, its entirely possible the heater is working perfectly well...An asthmatic squirrel could generate more heat.

I daily drove a 1961 IH Pickeup with a slant 4 and a 3 on the floor for a year in 2009. What a workout. Sold it and made a little profit. All my friends nicknamed it "Hayride"

My brother and I had a 67 Scout in high school. V8 3 speed on the floor. Lots of power, would just crawl along with the transfer case in low. He still has it sitting at his place. Someday I might go get it and restore it.

When my oldest daughter started driving I got her a '73 Scout II half cab. Rusty and beat, rebuilt 304 and the world's shortest glasspacks...15yrs later she still wants another one, I'm so proud..
