Got my new issue of "Hot Rod" in the mail. Get off my case, I've been getting it since 1967. BUT, there's an article on a Flyin' Miata car in Hot Rod Magazine !

I only found out about GRM in the first place because of a mention of the Challenge in HR, plus a picture of a stripped-down green MG Midget.  Then I went looking on the newsstands.  (Yeah, it was a while ago.)

I believe that was the May, 2003 issue. I remember it too because I was stuck in the middle of nowhere South Dakota for a month with nothing to read but that issue. It turned me on to GRM as well.

No idea on timeframe, but mine was a "how to get into racing" article with a grey VW jetta or something on the cover.

Well, if you think about it, probably most of the cars that have ever been in Hot Rod made it in BEFORE they were nearly 30 years old. Now that miatas are antique/vintage/etc they fit in a whole lot more brackets!

HR surprises me every once in a while. They did a feature on a 2JZ powered '68 Camaro a couple years ago and basically told their readers "if you don't like it, bite us. This is what hot rodding is all about."

Mail just came. Wow,was not expecting 9 pages of miata in Hot Rod. After years of Miata ownership I have a theory about the artical. I don't think a Miata fits their normal demographic, but they wanted this cool car in their magazine. So to prevent a revolt, they disguised it as a CANBUS story.

Good theory, except that it's a 2016. laugh

And look in the upper left corner of the cover - there's the Miata again! WE GOT A MIATA ON THE COVER OF HOT ROD. Okay, it's not a big picture, but I don't care. This is a proud moment.

Phillip, the author of the piece, is one of us. He'll talk to you about old Subarus until your ears fall off. He's crewed at Pikes Peak several times and is no stranger to racetracks. He's the one who got his hands on a 3D printer and used it to cast a custom gauge pod for his old C10 - which is a long bed and proud of it. He tried the Locost and loved it. He's all for pushing the boundaries of technology, so keep your eyes on HRM for more interesting stuff.

For those who haven't seen the article, here it is.

And to double up on the proud moment, the current issue of Automobile has 4 pages on a different FM Miata (read it here). Two different cars in two very different magazines at the same time. Yeah, I'm pretty happy.

The weird thing about that one was when they did a feature on Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift and covered the RB26DET-swapped Mustang they said "Are we going to see musclecars powered by import engines in the future? We hope not." And then a year or two down the road did the 2JZ Camaro.

Magazines change directions and writers change minds. Otherwise we'd still be seeing articles on vans.

HRM has passed through many phases.  It has been at times brilliant and at others just complete E36 M3e.  The Pro Street and the billet-rod trend are examples of the later.  It spawned Roadkill which was just incredible for a short while but now seems likely to jump the shark.

Years ago Hot Rod, Popular Hot Rodding and Car Craft were go to mags.  Times and interests change.   Technology has a great deal to do with it.   Hell, up until recently, I had little interest in roundy round type racing.   GRM changed that.

Pro Street will always be awesome to me and nothing anybody says can change that.

This reminds me, I need to find a new Levi's denim jacket.
