I am looking for some interesting ideas for cheap power for a Miata. Currently running a 1.6L turbo, and my Challenge budget is very stretched.
I am looking for good motor swap ideas that will give me 250+ hp. Prefer bolt-in V6 from a car that will have enough left on it to recoup the motor back down to zero. No radical mods- simple is definitely better.
Honda J series. Is there a cheaper way to bolt it to the Mazda 5 speed than the $3,000 adapter plate?
At the Challenge you told me you wouldn't be back next year, so what is the extra power for?

Which one of us was drinking?
I doubt I said that. I said The Mumpkin would probably not be back, and I certainly said I would not put the time into a 2016 car like I did for 2015, but I WILL be back (with or without a car). If I can find a formula to get the power I need into the budget without risking my sanity or my marriage, I MIGHT consider bringing The Mumpkin back. But I will still be driving the car, whether or not it comes back.
I am sure I said things that could be INTERPRETED to mean I wouldn't be back next year. You gotta watch me carefully- I'm pretty good at misleading.
...and I said NOTHING about my 2017 entry! (already started)

Yes.
Also a leakdown. We've got 2 weak cylinders.

FE3 was never imported to the states. Know a good source?

Remember that 20psi on a T25/T28 =/= 20psi on a larger turbo.

I'm with you on the larger turbo- just challenging to fit with a 1.6L (manifold, piping, etc)

It should all be similar to the 1.8 minus the head bolt pattern. Just have to find (or make) the right manifold.1.6 Log Mani
you can find a FE3 in the states under the hood of a 95+ Kia Sportage
What about a 1.8 swap? Can you do that and keep the 1.6 turbo parts?
Rotary engine is the answer you're looking for. A series 4 will give you 150hp out of the box, plus the grunt your turbo will add. You can pick up two dead 13b's dirt cheap from craigslist (I once bought two for $50 ea), make one of the two, and bolt that turbo up to it. The 13b bolts up to the miata bell housing so it fits your "easy swap" criteria.
Plenty of aftermarket support and info on the net should you find yourself wanting "more"
Sell the extra parts from the joining of the two engines to get your money back.
O ring the head, 250 shot nitrous pills?

Is there an actual build thread using this motor? Because the one posted earlier in this thread is a jdm motor.
In reply to DatsunS130:
I have seen build threads, but they seem very labor intensive.

Wait I thought the fe3 only came in the 99 sportage? I maybe wrong but I know for a fact they at least came in that year model, when I had a Miata I scourged over one fe3 in the junkyard.
I vote v8, it's the American way. And not a scrawny 1uz either. Probably easier/cheaper to make b6p power than 1uz

Someone hasn't drove a 1uz powered light car.... Let's see: 250hp? Check. Torque to match? Check. Simple swap? Check. Affordable to buy AND replace? Check. Really good mpg for eight cylinders? Check. Readily available? Check. Get your money back out of the scrap car? Check. Having the amazing sound of an EFI V8? Check. Having a RELIABLE engine that won't leave you stranded because of crappy GM or ford sensors? Check. And an engine that will make it 350,000miles before MAYBE needing a rebuild? Check.
I can do this all day. Oh, forgot the most important one: not paying a premium on an engine barely worth it's weight in scrap? Check.

OK so got any leads on 1uz donor cars?
What manual trans will they mate to?
SC400
I really want this one to put the motor in from my challenge car. Doesn't really say what is wrong.
LS400
There is an LS400 that I had a lead on outside of DC. I drove two hours agreed upon $600 but he couldn't find the title. Suposedley now he has found the title. I'm not really up for a 4+ round trip soon.
They make adapter plates for a bunch of toyota transmissions. R154, W58

Would a freshing of the engine take a hit on the budget? Just new piston rings and re-seating the valves. Also we had water/alcohol injection on our challenge car for about $110.
