Audi 5 cylinder in 944. I wonder how much harder a Turbo swap is.
There's a feller near me insists the 4liter audiV8 will work just fine, not a hard swap at all, into one o' them. This make me kinda tingly, thinkin bout it...
I liked my 2.7 biturbo when I had it. It seemed like it should be swapped into a place like the front of a 924/944. That or in the middle of a Boxster... or Europa. The down side is that the engine is kinda expensive relative to an older audi 5 pot.
that is awesome! in the video it seems like the 911 was holding the two 944's up then that exige just blew right in!!! makes me want a lotus bad
But... the video was kind of depressing. I mean, after all the engine work, the 20V car was unable to overtake what appears to be another 944? Maybe the one ahead is a turbo? Anyway, as mentioned it does seem to show that we should all buy a used Lotus if we want to go fast on-track!

I thought that was already common knowledge around here.
I don't understand why you would do a non-turbo Audi inline 5 swap. It only has 170bhp. Now a turbo on the other hand.
I guess it's from one of those days when you lift the hood and say "you know what this car needs? Another cylinder. Then it would be perfect."
In reply to kb58:what it looked like to me was the 944 ahead of him seemed to be using good blocking manuevers, untill he caught up with the 911 and kinda chick ,chicked...not much confidence ...but that lotus driver was like exsqueeze me fellas adios!!!
Yep. There's a couple of 5-cylinder turbo's running around in Europe. The problem is that the 10-valve motor is more common here in the states but won't easily fit in the engine bay without building a custom manifold. For that much work a 10V bottom end with a 20V head is a little easier to cobble together as the 20V turbo manifold is available in the aftermarket.
There's a gentleman in Russia that has an Audi V8 in his 924. From the pictures it looks like it was made for the car.
BTW, for those curious about all of this, the 924 uses an Audi motor from an Audi 100LS, which was the precursor to the Audi 80/4000, etc and their 5-cylinder motors. So the bellhousing is the same as the Audi 5-cylinder, which is also the same as the Audi V6 and V8 motors.
I believe I've mentioned this before whenever the 924/944 comes up :)
Oh and just for fun: The 79 and 80 924 used an Audi motor, VW Rabbit front suspension (with Audi 4-bolt pattern), Super Beetle/Van rear suspension and a Porsche 5-speed transaxle (derived from the 914/early 911). From 76-79 it used an Audi 4-speed FWD transaxle and from 80-82 it used an Audi 5-speed FWD transaxle (same basic unit that was in the Audi cars).
The 944 is basically the same underneath aside from the Porsche bolt pattern and larger brakes, the Porsche motor and Porsche power steering system. The front and rear suspension uses the same geometry and mounting points. The transaxle is an Audi unit and the door handles are still essentially an A1 Rabbit handle. Porsche tried to hide all of this with neat aluminum castings and other improvements, but it wasn't until the 968 that they were able to change enough parts to make it much less compatible with the old 924.
The funny thing is this: The 924 is lighter and with the narrow body it has less drag and higher potential top speed. A 924S with the 944 turbo motor would be a killer sleeper car. A 924 with the 20V turbo or a V8 would be a killer sleeper as well.

There's a feller near me who is putting an Audi V8 (forget if it's the 3.6 or the 4.2 - probably the 3.6) onto a 944 torque tube and putting the concoction into a Rabbit shell.
Bolt pattern is close but not 100%. Strikes me as odd, given that people bolt V8s up to Audi transaxles all the time, and the 944 uses Audi bolt pattern.
