Any guesses as to what this black material is used on the front of many prerunner trucks?

I'm assuming some type of plastic. Also, any grassroots (cheap) alternatives if the real-deal stuff proves to be expensive?

This looks like a good place for plastic garden edging

Good Answer! Correct or not, that's very cool stuff, and it sounds correct to me.

Too bad the garden stuff has a wood grain molded in.

Now where to buy 5" strips of UHMW?

UHMW is what we ran on skid plates on rock crawlers so you slide off the rocks instead of getting hung up on them.  I'd bet that on a prerunner you have an aluminum backing but we ran steel because weight didn't matter as much back then.

$49.99?

I guess it is just a piece of plastic, though.

$50.00 is nothing for some lighting or a shock absorber but yeah, like you said. It's a (~$10.00) piece of plastic.

Dubois Motorsports in Charleton Ma has rolls of that stuff in many different colors, if you actually want to lay hands on the some.   I buy all of my roll cage tubing from there.  Every time I go there, I always come home with extra stuff because I see something I just have to have.  Cool shop.  Great owner.  Great prices.

The link says ABS and it looks (on my cracked phone screen) exactly like the sheets of textured ABS I can get locally from the plastics supplier

A 4X8X1/8 sheet is about $25 at my local store.  Look for an industrial plastics supplier near you.

And now I have located an industrial plastic supplier 15 minutes away and am setting up a business account with them

Awesome. See if they will give you a tour of the warehouse. My supplier is happy to because it gives me a better idea of what they offer and consequently what I can purchase from them. I might just be really lucky but Multicraft Plastics is amazing. My bread and butter is their selection of Delrin rods that I machine into pretty much everything that isn't metal. They are a quarter of the cost of McMaster on most things.
