Speer records won't make Indy relevant again, the publicity they seek may not come in the form they desire.
Love the 500 for the history & have no idea what could be done to make it great again, but 2 versions of the same flavor car that have no link to anything production isn't what made the old days great...it was Millers and Deusies and Novii and Turbines and Diesels and Krafts...pushing speed barriers by application of dreams plus technology. And balls.
There's so much more to it than simply Speed.
Someone at Indycar should read Smokey Yunicks book sometime.
Interesting examples and then stating that they were production related. The best engines were not related to any production engines.
Also, reading Smokey's book would do nothing. Being creative costs too much. Sure, some teams would be able to put some cars together that can run at Indy- but the high end teams would just make cars that challenge F1 costs.
It's been a long time since someone had a great car come out of their small shop.
Being that safety is so important, the tub has to be pretty carefully made, which means that it will be made by one of the big race companies somewhere in the world.
The aero, computer, and carbon fiber genie can't be put back into the bottle.
Even right now, with this common chassis, and two good engines, the cost is so high that there are JUST 33 cars to fill the field.
Way to berkeleyin' go Hinch!! n Congrats Sam Schmidt
That was an exciting Fast Nine qualification. Almost an All American front row but glad Hinch got it.
Racing is a dikswinging contest, from manufacturer to driver to crew members to sponsors. Indy is one of the premier stages where it all hangs out. Flat track, fastest car , luckiest driver wins. Long live freedom.
Hinch! Canadians bracket the field- Hinch first, Tags last. Tags crash looked like it could have been a bit nausea inducing.

Todays qualifying changed a little.
Josef Newgarden got the pole. Not many changes after that.

That is really cool!!!! Talking about drama. Coukd not have played out any better.
In reply to Streetwiseguy:
No I didn't. My bad.
I'm going this year with Tom Spangler and can't wait. I just caught up on the highlights of both days of quali. I'm really looking forward to this. I've been to many Indy car races, I've seen 500 mile oval races at Michigan Speedway, I've been to the F1 race at Indy several times but never THE 500, with this year being the 100th running I just had to go. Delighted Hich pulled it off and I'll be rooting for him to win from poll.
Adrian---- it will be an experience you'll never forget. I've been to many, many sporting events and races. Nothing compares to the Indy 500. The size, pageantry, and history are larger than life. It really is an amazing spectacle.
Bring sunblock, rain gear, and comfortable shoes. They also allow you to bring a cooler into the complex--- so bringing in your own libations and food is a good idea.
The flyby will take place just after the lone soldier plays "Taps". (which is one of the most moving things in all of sports) Make sure you aren't under the stands when it happens--- so you can get a good look. I'm not sure what they are planning this year, but in the past there have been Harriers, B-25s, the Stealth bomber, and fighter, and on the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, they had four P-51 Mustangs leading a B-17 bomber. Oh yeah.... and Chuck Yeager was flying the lead Mustang! It's that kinda party!
In reply to Adrian_Thompson:
And just take a nap after the race. Let the traffic die down that way. I think many people who let you park in their lawn are prepared for people passed out in their yards.
It's been over 20 years since I was there for a 500. Great time.
This will be my second one, and my 15-year-old son's first. He's not really into racing, but I think he'll enjoy the sheer spectacle of it all.
