I think the requirements are size and weight.. especially weight. All of it is going to be behind the rear wheels on a tiny car

Behind the wheels? Why not fill the back seat?

Hmmmmm, what about a 1st gen MR2 drivetrain.... twin cam, 110hp stock

We have a winner

yes smart car would be the way to go but not challenge priced.... I am fine with taking up the back seat with an engine, as there really isn't much of a back seat anyway.
When I look at a FWD car the engine is more in front of the wheels right....or almost on top of them, so in the fiat that puts the engine in the back seat area.... haha and maybe even room for a "trunk"
Front engined, V8 powered Fiats have long been a dragstrip staple, pretty much since those things were new. If I had that, I'd come up with a response to the Chrysler deal by putting a Mopar smallblock up front. Be hard to pull off on a Challenge budget, but a set eight gasser style velocity stacks through the hood would be perfect.
I looked into Smart car drivelines but even totalled ones are out of the challenge field.
If he's 6' tall he'll need to put the seat all the way back which leaves about 10" of back seat area for the driveline. I had wanted to use the geo driveline out of the one I just bought thinking a prizm was the 3 cylinder small package type, but I found out after purchase it's a 4 banger. However I didn't want to cut mine up too much so my selections are limited.
Fiero running gear. Cheap in 4 or 6 cyl configuration. Already RWD already Mid engine. You gotta throw some serious flares on regardless.
I had thought about a fiero as they pop up around me a lot. But...boy do I hate everything about them. I will look at them tho...
Huffaker Engineering built a rear-engined original Mini for SCCA racing. You might want to take a look at what they did--I know, they had lots of bucks, but, the concept is sound. They dominated the competition.
Good part is, yes, it had flares, but they weren't humongous, as you'd need with a Fiero transaxle/engine.
BMW motorcycle inline 4 with trans feeing into it's shaft drive to a rear end out of an MG midget or Cushman 3-wheeler. I think some of them were powered by Harley engines, so the rear axle out of one should be narrow and take the amount of power your talking about. Just don't dump the clutch. You could get a hold of an old formula ford rear end, too...and it wouldn't be hard to narrow, if needed. Just thinking out loud.
So far the Fiero makes sense, and the VW trans versions are okay. But the Goldwing...now THAT is cool!
well, if considerations are given to driver room.. why not an X 1/9 drivetrain. With the right amount of lightening and cams.. we all know that engine can rev to 8 grand all day

I have a GoldWing stripped of everything but lightness. There are faster engines for the weight.
Dan
racinginc215: where is the goldwing you found, shoot me an email. Or I will do the same to you.
mad_machine: fiat in a fiat...what!
triumph5: thanks for the tip, i'l check it out
This forum is great!!
I saw the CL ad, and thought of this thread. And there's a complete, regularly driven one in red about 35 minutes from me. Makes me smile when i see it. It barely covers the sidewalk next to the owner's driveway.
I have thought about restoring it....but it is really pretty rusty. Also I like crazy projects....thus the reason for building something out of it. I think i would drive it more if it was a bit quicker than with its 17hp

My eVil thought exactly.
I say transverse because it'll be a lot easier to package in the middle. I like the Swift and Honda drivetrains because they are pretty narrow, making it easier to stuff in the back of something that small. A north/south oriented engine (VW Fox/Dasher, 914 Porsche, Acura Vigor) could be done as well but you might not have anywhere to sit.
Something really crazy: a snowmobile engine. Like the one George Bowland put in his BBR Shark:
