I have always kept a tally on the box or bucket to count out how many quarts I've taken.
This is how I caught a certain oil supplier consistently selling 5 gallon buckets with a shade under 18 quarts of oil in them.
When confronted, the voice on the other phone (salesdroid? management weasel?) mumbled something about how they meter oil by weight, not volume.
You are SELLING it by volume!! It is a liquid, not Frosted Flakes, it doesn't settle in shipment!

And even if that had a modicum of truth to it how in the world would there be a 10% variation in the mass of the oil!? I guess it might be easier/cheaper to build equipment to fill the container by weight rather than a flow meter so maybe that is how they're doing it, but if that equipment is that far off..... I hope they sent you a bucket or five in compensation!

They stuck to their guns and we stopped buying from them. Not just buckets, but also the refills for the three 250 gallon oil tanks, drums of ATF, coolant, and washer fluid.

I've been buying the 2.5 gallon jugs of rotella for a while. My truck has a powerstroke, and I just use it in gas engines too. Go through lots of the stuff. The cost for a 5 gallon bucket is the same as a box of 2 2.5gal jugs, so no advantage there.

I can see accidental hilarity if you have both, are already a few sheets into the wind and stagger out to the garage for a refill.

What do you do with the old oil if you can't put it back in the jug to take in for disposal?
I heat my shop with it.
I put it into a used 5-gallon bucket and dump it 5 gallons at a time.

I drain it and put it in one gallon water jugs. I buy distilled water for my coffee maker because our water here is so hard it clogs coffee makers within a year.

Just thinking out loud here but maybe pour it from the box/bag into an empty 5qt oil jug, or a cheap 1.5-2 gallon gas can? Or even a translucent plastic diesel exhaust fluid jug with the long flexible spout. If you don't have a DEF jug handy just look on the shoulder of any road and you'll see one pretty soon. I probably see half a dozen of them on my commute to and from work every day.

I bought a box today at wallyworld too . Shelf sticker said $60 but at checkout rang up at $65.97 typical walmart trick. I drained 5 quarts into empty Mobil One 5 qt. plastic container and will continue to do so . Still cheaper than $29.97 for 5 quarts. Spigot worked fine on my box and it swivels so turned it a little sideways to pour. Didn't need a funnel but did need paper towel to catch drip after closing spigot . Storing it upright in case spigot decides to leak .
As for how to return used oil I use one of these. Had it for 30 years. They quit making them about 20 years ago but when they started making them again 5 years back I bought a couple more. Gave one to my eldest and am using two now so I can be lazy dropping off oil. Of course it means they have to drain it and hand it back to you but they last forever.

mine doesn't have the extender to raise the catch part and without it it's super low, even fits under my lowered corolla.

exactly who thought that oil in a box was a good idea?
We laughed at the first wine in a box.

Same thing here, but I love it when they do that.
If they do it and the item is $10 or less, you get it free. If it's greater than $10 you get $10 off.

Well, we have cats and those cat litter containers look like the deal.
Just the thing for a dry sump. Only need 2 boxes. And a spare quart.

Per the contract law course I just finished taking, you have a legal case on your hand my friend.
Also, this oil in a bag idea seems suspect. It's like trying to get all of the fake nacho cheese out of a bag in a taco kit, it's next to impossible.

I'd imagine some class-action pirate would be all over that if they could get a bunch of shops to sign on in bulk.
As for getting it all out of the bag....even 90wt gear oil is a little less viscous than nacho cheez.
In reply to Trent :
Milk tastes funny out of a jug, you haven't lived until you get that fresh bag taste lol
I don't hate this idea.
For one, less waste.
For 2, less cost.
For 3, fewer jugs to keep up with.
Set the box on a shelf. Dispense any quantity needed into the above pictured container. Dump in crankcase. Easy as pie and the jug stays on the shelf.
I would love to be able to get all of my oils like that. So much neater than the 8 to 10 jugs sitting on the shelf now.
Y'all don't put oil back in the ground where it came from?
Less waste is great but I always reuse the plastic jugs for the old oil, coolant, etc.I live with someone that washes plastic ziplock bags for a second use. She won't let anything go to waste or be used once in her household.
