Time was, if it weren’t a Turbo or Cabriolet, you could barely give away a 911. Times change. Just sayin...

I don’t remember those days....unless they were basket cases.
Well. I berkeleyed up.
Power Steering E36 M3 the bed in the disco a couple weeks ago. Reservoir was full, and it was otherwise behaving normally, so I didn’t think much about it.
...until yesterday.. I drove it a whopping 5 or 6 miles to pick up a utility trailer. Halfway there, the battery light came on. Not putting two & two together I said “Oh great. Needs an alternator.” About ten seconds later another light popped up. Temperature was pegged. “Oh berkeley.”
Limped it to the guy’s produce stand where the trailer was for sale. Coolant was shooting from radiator and overflow.
The pulley/shaft for the PS pump had moved forward a couple inches from the pump, and the belt had come loose.
Mama brought tools, and I’d hoped I could shove the pulley back, reattach the belt and limp it the 5 miles back to the farm. To no avail. Pulley still spins but won’t go “back in the hole.”
Dude hooked me up with several jugs of water and I limped it back.
I didn’t dump smoke out the exhaust, but haven’t checked the oil yet.
Hopefully I’m just into it for a PS pump, belt, and radiator. Maybe a reservoir and hoses if they contributed to the failure :/
Fingers crossed. I said I wouldn’t fall into the trap of spending money on the thing, but here we are.
the PS pump is a pain to get at, especially if you have the airbagged rear suspension. The pump itself is pretty easy to remove once you get to it and if it was only leaking, you can rebuild it. I think your's might be toast.
As for your pegging the temp guage.. you just lit the fuse on the engine. It won't be this week or this month, but I am willing to bet there is a liner now starting to work it's way loose. Once it starts to drop, the engine is toast
Yeah, continuing to drive one of these when they're getting warm is a very bad idea. Stop and get it towed home when it overheats. Too late for this one but maybe on the next one you'll remember!

I know. I’m a dumbass :/
My flawed logic was:
A: I’ve been trying to nail this dude down for a week to buy this stupid trailer, and didn’t want to bail on him, and
3. Was trying get back as quickly as possible to do 4th of July shenanigans with the fam.
It wasn’t till the drive home that I remembered the “DO NOT OVERHEAT” warnings :/
What sucks more is I really don’t know when I’ll find the time to wrench on the thing myself.
There’s a local shop that several folks have recommended recently. Calling for a guestimate today. Radiator *might* be a JB weld affair; one pinhole on top as far as I can tell.

Nope, not on these motors- it's just not worth it. Rovers are great, as long as they don't get hot. I'm hoping for you that the motor is fine, but it's unlikely and a sketchy radiator isn't going to help
poopshovel again said:PS: Is there any chance there’s a “plug & play” belt for PS delete?
I don’t know of one, is it possible to measure it and buy a few belts in similar lengths?
mad_machine said:big heavy rover is not exactly a fun vehicle to drive with no power steering.
Eh. Wife and I have been doing it the last couple weeks. Keeping in mind, it’s generally only driven about a half-mile at a time.

Ignores advice.
hilarity ensues...
Pretty much...though I blame my laziness more than I blame the disco. berkeley. I’m starting to sound like a battered woman.

This reminds me of subaru shopping - "10 year old subaru, adult owned, 90k miles, new head gaskets, no major issues, needs brake job"
$150-ish for pump and belt. $5 for JB Weld. She’s back on the road & kickin ass. No “tell-tale” signs of looming catastrophic failure.
Now I’m trying to decide if having 2 farm-trucks is cool enough to warrant keeping both, or if it and the poopfinder need to have a tug-of-war to decide which one gets sold.
I’m REALLY impressed by the 4L capability of the Pathfinder. After going to town with some boltcutters on some old barbed wire fence, only to realize 6” of said fence (and 3’ of post) were buried underground, I hooked up a chain to the center-post on about 100’ of fence and yanked that berkeleyer out no problem. It was like a scene from a bugs bunny cartoon!

with a rapey skunk? yeah, i know, not bugs bunny but when i think of you i think of rapey skunks.

Well, you went from an engine that underdelivers on its size to one that overdelivers. And that's to say nothing of the underrated 5.6L they stuck in some other pathfinders!

True dat. Both are total freaking pigs on the road. I really am shocked by the literal “stump-pulling” power of the pathfinder though. I’ve got another section to pull in the next couple weeks. We’ll see how the disco stacks up.
