What he said. Lots of GM V6 swaps documented. I even knew one guy that shoe horned in a Northstar into one.
Only reasons to buy a 4 cylinder are:
Its very clean and you want to motor swap it
its very clean and you don't care about speed
it very cheap and you need a car.
I've own 4, only one was 4 cylinder for reason 3.
Don't get me wrong, they are good cars, but the 4 w/auto is slow.....
I had a 4 cylinder with a manual transmission. Between the 4500rpm redline and only being a 4sp, anything over 65 felt like abuse. My 1981 nissan 200sx was significantly faster.
Nocones on here had one & let me take it for an autocross run or 2...probably 15+ years ago. It had reasonable torque for its weight, so it wasn't too bad on a tight course. It would probably be a blast in city driving, as long as you didn't need to win any stoplight drags. Below highway speeds it really didn't feel any slower than a 1.6 Miata to me, but that may partly have been due to the feeling of being closer to the ground.
Edit: I should clarify that his wasn't an automatic. No idea how much of a penalty that comes with.
Believe it or not, the Iron Duke and the automatic were pretty much made for each other. It's pretty big at 2.5 L, and has lots of low-end torque, but pretty much done by 4500 rpm. No sweat, the auto will just shift up a gear and keep the torque flowing. When I first married my wife (almost 25 years ago!), she had a Grand-Am with that same combo, and the thing actually ran pretty well. I believe the 10.6 0-60 times I've seen published for the Fiero, at least when it was new. Now, 30 years later, I'm not sure what ponies would be left in the stable.
According to the interwebz it's about the same as my daily driver 0-60 .......I drive a 00 ford explorer as my dd lol
Although its also apparently as fast as a caprice but unlike the caprice it doesn't seem like there is much cheap ways to get more power out of it vs a sbc
I'm not sure I want to get in to serious drive train swaps for my first challenge....maybe after awhile ill drop a sbc into a fiero if it'll fit
A guy by us shows a stock looking one at the Lemont, IL car show in the summer. Really stock looking except for that V8 he neatly tucked in. I'm not a Fiero fan but was looking for them on Craigslist that night.
In reply to Antihero:
Where are you located?
What CL cities do you shop?
I suspect we can find you a Challenge car.
My first answers will be Lincoln Mark 8, anything Infiniti and Volvo S80 t6 with 6cyl twin turbo.
I read that the Fiero used a Chevette front subframe and suspension in the rear, and some other parts bin front-end? (except for the last year '87 model)

I use the Spokane wa and Coeur d alene Craigslist. I would appreciate the help, I have a few ideas and feelers out there but I would love more options

Actually it was the Citation subframe as that was fwd.
Very slow. I drove a 4 speed and it was tolerable in town but not so much at highway speeds. Can't imagine the auto helps.

Last time I looked, the V8 Archie mounting kits were going for upwards of $900. That's why I suggested SC3800. There area couple kits for less than half that.

And '88 was the last year and the year with the dedicated rear suspension. GM did their usual stunt of killing the car off as soon as they perfected it. Pity, because the '89 was slated to be available with a convertible and the 3400 Twin Cam
