Because the race pads listed are all the same, and I cannot find the early pads anywhere.
Vin 130, something 000 down is different, they say.

Mazda may have changed the compound which would mean a different part number in the system, but the pad shape didn't change. I'll take a look at the parts fiches shortly.

"Sir, we're going to have to do a brake swap on your car instead of the pads and rotors we'd originally estimated... Price is gonna double. Internet said so"
This is interesting.
NAY1-33-23ZA is the part number for production up to 6/1 /1989 (if my Dad's old car still has the original brakes, it'll have these)
NAY1-33-23Z is from 5/19/1990 (no end date) and says "NON ASBESTOS"
NAY0-33-23ZA does not have dates but is the same number used for 1991-93. Asbestos level not specified :) These are the most expensive.
The A implies it's a superseded number, I believe, so NAY1-33-23ZA should work in place of NAY1-33-23Z. NAY1-33-23ZA and NAY1-33-23Z are both flagged as "invalid part" in the Mazda Team Support system.
So, I'm sticking with my theory of some different compound changes as I've never come across a fitment problem.
