Not a Miata, but BP05 related. I blew out the #2 plug on the Ford Econobox today (going to get into digging tomorrow) but was curious as to if you've seen this in your travels and would be curious as to a culprit. The plugs are far from freshly installed.

I've heard of it happening over the years, but I don't have any magic causes or solutions.

Oddly enough I have had a spark plug blow out on my car, in the winter.

I think the clue also lies in the misfiring Corolla that I dealt with earlier this week.  It happened to just be a dead coil, but the spark plug for that cylinder was also loose.

I'm thinkin', comma, that the cold temperatures allow the plug to wiggle around, by some thermal expansion thing.  Then when the plug is allowed to rattle in the threads, the threads give out.

I'm hoping that's the case and that it's nothing more. Fingers crossed and I should have confirmation within the next few hours.

Circle gets the square, Pete you were spot on. Unrelated, but I definitely need to do the valve cover gasket as is oil getting down into the valley in 3 of the 4 cylinders, I knew it needed to be done, but not that badly. (I didn't go with my usual uridium plugs today, knowing that was potentially the case).

If this is an older car, chances are that at some point in time, the plug in question was crossthreaded and wasn't secure in the first place.

It was a pleasant surprise that the NGKs went in smoothly and easily without drama. I was expecting to have to run a sleeve.

Recently, We've discovered that the NGK Ruthenium HX RockAuto sold us, but shipped via a third party were counterfeit. Contacting RockAuto, they claim they don't sell counterfeit. However, because they (RockAuto) doesn't have a warehouse and they use third party suppliers.. one isn't guaranteed they're getting quality products.

How did you determine they were counterfeit? Did you provide any evidence to Rock Auto?

Rock Auto is a drop ship company like Worldpac, they aren't a parts store.

Proof came when we shipped the counterfeit plugs to NGK themselves we have NGK involved with this from the beginning. RockAuto didn't want to take responsibility for a third party mistakes and this type of counterfeit is rampant. This is not the first time, search the web and you'll find plenty of people talking about counterfeit plugs. Plus plugs should last 100,000 miles these counterfeit last less than 30K miles.

We've seen incidents of counterfeit plugs (search the forum for Nanobeavers) but an aside, the 100,000mi spec is more of a "if you haven't had problems yet, you really should change them" spec.

A lot of automakers are specifying 60k or even 30k now, even with platinums or iridiums.  I assume it's for emissions warranty reasons, as they really really don't want you to damage a converter before the power train warranty is up.

Subaru for sure wants plugs at 60k on their timing chain engines.  I think Toyota is also on the 60k train, at least for engines where you don't have to lift the intake manifold off to access half the plugs.

Just wanted to follow up, we’ve had a RockAuto account for several year through several builds and they’ve never made a mistake until we started working on and locating parts for the van. Since then every part they sent was not correct, was not what we order or the part did not fit. Because of this we’ve had to close our account with them and move over to Partsgeek which had been doing fine and offered nearly the same assortment and options when locating parts.
