That's a sweet moto rig, but I plan on it being a winter daily driver too, and that would be a beast.

Currently spending time looking at Motovan builds, might be the most logical option, even if it's not as cool as a small box van. Could still spend big bucks and get an AWD GMC Savanna with a V8.
what about an old ambulance? Usually a diesel and sometimes they have 4x4

tldr 89 F350 7.3 with an ambulance box
The new full sized nissan vans are pretty slick, and have an auto trans that will actually last 150k

Good grief - why the hell did he paint the windows???? It makes what would normally be a stealthy vehicle stick out like a sore thumb. There are plenty of vans for the same money that haven't been butchered like that.
Otherwise, I can confirm his 15/17 MPG is about spot-on to what I got with my '90 with a 5.0.

I have that one saved, price just dropped on it today, used to be up at $2k. Also, he just added photos showing the painted windows. Should have just painted the insides of the windows black so it didn't look awful. I should call and get more details just for fun. I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet. I should really sell my Tundra first, my driveway is already overflowing into the street.
I would look at Penske first, then maybe Budget. Penske units are very well maintained. I've sold a lot of the DRW vans, mainly PowerStroke E-450's, but I always wanted a little 10' SRW city van for personal use. (Now, I'd like a Transit Connect with Focus ST drive train).
I agree that Penske trucks are very well maintained. I would -not- touch an ex-Uhaul truck if my life depended on it
OOOOOOHHHHHHH if only I had $8 grand cash right now!

4x4 ambulance, 460 cu gas hog though
mad_machine wrote: 460? I remember running a box truck with a 429... that thing got about 4mpg
the 460 will get 8 mpg no matter if you are towing or driving on the highway or in the city.
In reply to MrChaos:
That thing is sweet!
The Quigley is pretty bitchin too, probably not many of those around.

That thing is pretty cool, if I were looking for a project. Not a very good daily driver to replace an 03 Toyota however.

One of the few places I ever saw a 4x4 school bus; Catalina Island, CA
That's pretty cool, nice mid-sized bus. You could build a dent sized living space and garage in that.

I'm afraid it's been spoken for already, but if the buyer ahead of me backs out I'm probably going to get this one this weekend.
I did go drive that step van. It was awesome. If I had room for a project it would have been awesome. I probably could have cleaned it up a bit and made a chunk of money off of it. It had a 3 speed tranny though, so it screamed at highway speed. It would have needed too much work to be able to do what I wanted to do with it.
A friend of mine just had his house broken into and the thieves found his spare set of keys which allowed them into his safe to steal cash and guns. He offered me his cargo van for $2 grand so he could pay bills. I bought it. It's not what I want but it helped him out and I'll have something to drive after i sell the Tundra. It's got a rubber floor, tie downs, all insulated and carpeted in the back, and 2 RV windows with screens and sliders. It's got 188k miles, 4.2l V6 with new plugs, wires, O2 sensors, brakes and new Toyo all terrain tires. It doesn't look like it will need anything other than a good cleaning. I'll get to try out a regular length and height cargo van this way to see if I really want a tall van with big doors.
Keep the truck and buy a small trailer to tow behind it. My buddy has the same one as the first one in the thread. 200,000 and still running strong. He carries a bunch of heavy plumbing stuff in it all the time, so it goes thru front end parts, brakes, and tires. Seems like every time he clips a curb turning into a job site, its enough to blow a tire. He has to register it commercial and carry a D.O.T. card with him because its over 10,000 pounds. I went the F350 and trailer route, and my expenses are much less then his, but I'm not rolling a giant advertising billboard like he is.
Sold the Tundra in less than 24 hours after posting on craigslist for my full asking price of $11k. So now that I've got a big wad of cash I'm actively searching. I'd really like a wheelchair van, I'm going to check this one out tomorrow,
http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/ctd/4806718416.html My issue with this one is the locationg of the lift, I'd have to remove it in order to install a hitch. Not really a big deal, I'd probably yank the lift out of any wheelchair van. I just want to see how it was attached and if there was any major modification to the structure. It's also priced a little high I think.
A short bus is another option, I'm also going to check this one out. Mostly because it is just so cheap and a diesel. The short buses this short and with SRW are not that common. I wonder how hard it would be to fabricate a fold down rear door like a cargo trailer?
