There are wide eye kits and narrow eye kits. Narrow eyes may not be street legal in your area. Baja bug kits were always my favorite part of the Sears catalog.
Wait..............are you saying that you could buy a Baja Bug kit through the Sears catalog at one point?
Right up through the mid 80s.
My buddy has owned one for years and years and it gets increasingly less and less use. They DO look cool, but are mostly only fit for profiling on the street and really only at street speeds.
HELL on the highway, REALLY hell at passing speeds. Unstable, too high, too narrow, limited suspension travel, hard ride, reverse camber, too little caster, over-sized and usually mis-matched front-to-rear over inflated mud and gravel tires, too light weight, prone to cross winds, just a ridiculous, yet WAY cool looking vehicle ! ! !
An accident at any speed about 35mph, and even ay that, uncomfortable as can be.
Just saying . . . .

Picks up wet blanket. Throws over excited people.
Hey, they are just a Beetle with a body kit.
Nothing really special.

I think they could make a really cool beach vehicle as in low speeds, soft surface, good traction etc......................of course I guess you would have to warn people about the giant, 5' tall, really HOT exhaust pipe on the back!

Yes, keep going! Drive those prices down!
"Yes, keep going! Drive those prices down!"
Here in Massachusetts, the prices are already down. All of the dunes, sand pits, beach and forest access is closed. The Bajas are just awkward street machines with VW engines. Nothing going on at all. Sort of had their day and that day has passed . . .

Any suggestions for something that pushes similar buttons?

You say it as though there were something wrong here....

Agreed. Have you seen some of the E36 M3 we drive?
This might be one of those cars whose prices plummet during winter. Ironically, they look like a fun winter beater.
What about a rail buggy? I've always loved them and I'm noticing that they're all over CL in my area...at least my mental image says they'd make a really fun summer day toy.

Owned a junker: My 2 cents: Get a Non SuperBeetle (they have strut front suspension), also, '67-up(I believe) regular Beetles have true IRS (non swing-axle). Enjoy. Really nothing wrong with the swing axle until you crank up the torsion bars.
69 up.. the 68 with the automatic stickshift got full IRS. the standard shift beetle did not get it till 69

How about a Baja Thing?
I think they are getting good money for those these days.
Things always go for stupid money.
best Baja I ever saw... looked mostly stock. it had widened fenders, but the rest of the car was untouched save for loss of the running boards and replacement of the bumpers (and running boards) with tubular steel. the beetle was then given a suspension lift like a regular Baja. it was very very subtle and probably just as capably offroad

We don't even have beaches here, it'd be a primarily winter car for me. Big knobby studded tires on narrow steelies.

My old 356 Pre-A RAT Porsche body mounted on a shortened Beetle pan?

Team evil has a good point, they're kind of death traps, especially old ones, but they're a hell of a lot of fun. I love mine, but I DD a motorcycle and honestly feel safer on it than in the beetle, but that would never keep me from driving it. Also, chicks really dig them.

There is a Beetle that has done some rallycross events with us. It's never fast, but it always looks fun to drive.
I sold it a couple of tears ago or so, bought it for next to nothing (genuine Maine Barn Find,) got an offer that I couldn't pass up.
