Id like to try a c4 sometime. Id only go for a nasty early model with major problems for not over 3k, though. I am better at fixing than i am at buying expensive things.

You're all a bunch of enablers, y'know? We're looking at this one today or tomorrow: http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/1731760685.html
They're so cheap...who cares if they rattle or you have to replace the dash with custom autometer gauges?!
^ bINGO.... I'd strip that dash out and install a nice piece of aluminum with all the pretty gauges I wanted.
anyone who doesn't like them , hasn't driven one. Setup right the turn in is amazing, the sound and 300 Ft Lb off idle is enough to make you giggle.
Wow, made me look. Here's a six speed for 5K right now anyway:

An '87 for $3k in Richmond, VA. Seller says it has a "lower head gasket failure."
A '92 LT1 car with a 6 spd for $6k obo. Has high miles but if you could cut that price down that sounds like a very solid prospect. 6 spd

Wow, that is beautiful. C4s seem to look a lot better now than they did ten years ago.

I agree. I was never a 'Vette fan to begin with, and when the C4 came out I thought it looked like a cheap running shoe. I've been equally bored ever since, despite all of the kick-ass option boxes you could check thru the years.
Lately though, some of the later C4's and especially the FRC C5's are really starting to appeal to me.
Hard to argue with the potential of these cars when you look at the buy-in price for a nice one.
They switched to a part-analog dash with a somewhere around 90/91 IIRC, I think around the same time they gained airbags. That dash still has a digital speedo read-out.

Im with you, c-4's are growing on me more and more. I remember taking my dad's new 93 out for a spin when it was new, was a fun car. I liked the cockpit feel of the interior a lot, the engine sounded good and it ran great.
OK, I'll admit it. I've been thinking about a C4 lately also. There's one that autocrosses regurlarly here and I like how it handles. I know it takes work to get it to handle well but doesn't anything? I've been considering acquiring something more roomier than my Miata. I understand MPG isn't bad considering. Never considered myself a vette guy but I've been hankering for some good old fashioned 'merican V8 rumble.
But alas a pipe dream since I bought my wife a new car at xmas.
I seriously wanted a Corvette for a long time, just because I'm American, and I've heard the owners' club is packed full of awesome.
Seeing running/driving C4s at prices like this gives me very dirty thoughts.
So, you've moved to America, gone to Vegas and bought a Corvette? Now all you've got to do is get yourself a handgun and start hating the French, though not necessarily in that order.
You'll fit right in here.

I was under the impression that the basic suspension is a decent design and responded well to basic shock/spring upgrades. Am I poorly informed?
I would personally get a newer LT1 car if I were to buy a C4. I remember when I was 15 my cousin let me take his 1994 out by myself for a joy ride near his home in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota. At the time I thought it was the fastest car in the world, lol. I think its worth the extra money to buy a newer LT1 car. I have driven a mid 80's C4 and it felt like a lot less car than the 94...
Although in my area you can get early model C5s for about the same money as the newer C4s(8,000-10,000) That choice is a no brainer in my mind - C5 all the way.
Be aware that there are tons of mods for the L98, and tons of mods for the LS series motors, which makes everything relatively inexpensive. However, the same can't be said for the LT1 -- which was made for a short period of time, and was different enough from the L98 to make things painful from a financial standpoint.
I'd love another Corvette -- but it would be C5 or C6 all the way. The extra money is worth it to get the better engine and chassis in my opinion.

If you start with a Z51 suspension, even the spring upgrade part is debatable. Just get good shocks, balance the understeer or oversteer with swap bars appropriately, and throw a good wheel / tire package on it.

My C4 wasn't a Z51 package -- I simply had revalved Bilsteins on it, and was more than happy with turn-in and body control. There are also kits that allow you to remove the leaf springs, and replace them with a coilover set-up on each shock. Uber-trick.
