I am likely going to look at one on monday that has $1500 obo written on the window. All I know now is that it is Tan and 4x4 with the solid front axle so pre-85. Anything major to look for other than rust.

85 was the last year of the solid front axle. The trucks were basically the same from 79-88. Sure they had some minor various of brake sizes wtc, but they are all the same.
Watch from frame rust between the gas tank and frame rail. Mine rotted out there. Watch for bad repairs in this area. Other than that not much breaks on them. I went through a bunch of starters, but I bought cheap ones
Edit: for that matter the trucks are mostly the same up through 93. Minor changes but a lot of similarity.

What body style is it? The 22r-te was only available in the 86-88? trucks with IFS but solid front axle conversions are easy and rampant these days, so it could be a later vehicle.
The 22re is better due to fuel injection, but both are fine. The timing chain guides make noise around 100k, replace them with steel from engbldr.
22re started in 1986. You don't want that anyway. If your going to to build a 2xr engine, carb is the only way to do it. Unless you want to turbo it. Either way is throwing money in the trash. Do an Engine Swap (1uzfe) or live with the squirrel power.

22re started in 85. That's why it's a unicorn year. Last year for solid axel and first year for fuel injection. My 86 was carb'd. I never had problems with the carb but would have preferred the fuel injection for running at angles off-road. Though I did off-road the truck and didn't have many issues.
If they aren't rusty, they're awesome. that and 22rs don't make great power, but if you have one, throw a cam in it and a header on it, at least that helps a little.
all i know about them is that the chassis and drivetrain will last as long as 4 or 5 bodies before being too worn out to use any more..
Well i went and looked at it. The frame just behind the front rear leafspring mounts had been replaced on both sides and the very rear cross member wasn't looking the best. The main nail in the coffin was it turned out to be a buy here/pay here place and it was $1500 down... They wanted $6500 for the truck which is about $3500 more than I want to pay. Well back to looking at Geo Trackers and Suzuki Sidekicks.
