My fc had lots of room for mufflers. I actually blew them up once due to a fueling issue. It was rather spectacular.
Have you considered a used set off a 90's mustang GT. Junkyard fodder for not much cash. They actually have decent flow and should work well with your motor.
Another possible easy button would be to go with stock or upgraded mufflers for an fc. You know the will fit. That would just leave plumbing to them. One down side to these is they can be quit heavy as they are designed to take the heat of a rotary motor. I don't know how they would sound. They are designed to kill the high pitch of the rotary so I would imagine that they would have no problem taking the higher tinny sound out of a v8. And as for drone well rotary motors are the king of drone.
Well its been a long time coming but I have the exhaust for the car done! Its at the shop now but don't have a video of it yet. I have spent a few weeks trying to find videos of a 302 with a fart can and here is on of the best ones. -302 fart can muffler-
Saw your thread a little late, but I was into the same problem with a 30 powered MGA that I'm collecting parts for. I want to to be as quiet as can be but still let the engine flow decently.
I was at a Cruise Night this past Friday night when a '67 Mustang came in. Quiet as a stocker but running a 302 conversion. Looked it over reel goob. Exhaust ran out to a single muffler mounted cross-ways behind the spare tire well. The owner said that they pretty much came stock with this configuration.
This is how I'm going with the MGA now as there's NO room underneath but I can easily re-configure the trunk floor to accommodate the cross-ways muffler.

Thanks! I would not be able to run a dual in muffler in my set up and the cut outs just arnt in it so I am running the ricer style fart cans on the car to it looks like a stock ricer car. Might as well look the part.!
Dynomax vts are pretty quiet at low rpms.
The cheapie electric cutouts on ebay can work. Buddy has set on his charger he paid less for the pair then I did for a single name brand one. He has also had no problems whileihadtons of problems from my QTP
Well I got to drive the car today. Sounds good but is a bit loud on the inside, but everyone said its very quiet. So I will have to get someone to do a drive by and see what I think.
What's the loud sound like, kind of a deep droning sound? If it's quiet outside but loud inside, that'd be my guess, so I'm curious.
Ya just kind of a drone, just over all loud but it gets quieter above 2000RPM my guess is its a drone which really sucks a ton of dynomat is not in the budget! Really looking forward to hearing the car from the outside!

Yeah, there is stuff that is just like Dynamat at Home depot. Used for HVAC ductwork, it's MUCH cheaper than Dynamat but does the same job.
If money was no object, and packaging was no concern, I wonder about a dual-inlet/dual-outlet chambered muffler. Install downstream of the x-pipe. Sort of like a resonator + piping run shortening device. I think Flowmaster has a muffler like this with a pretty short case.
McMaster carr mastic. cheapest dynamat alternative with the best coverage/dampening ratio ive found.
and foil backed jute. makes a huge difference in drone.

Ya im very happy! I got what I wanted a 302 that does not sound like a old truck or a mustang! The mufflers really help to smooth out the sound making it sound like more or less nothing. Everyone knows the sound of a mustang or a LS or a boxer but this doesn't sound like any motors motor which is what I wanted!
What mufflers did you end up with??
I picked up this cheap set off ebay for $35 each. They are 2.5" in and 4" out without any face heat ring in the tail pipe. The welds seem good and they are light! Much Much Much lighter then the factory mustang mufflers I was looking to use.

I'd just run round Borla XR-1's, but my tolerance for pain may be higher than some.

Yeah, I wouldn't change anything on the car if you're happy. Are you still experiencing the drone mentioned earlier? Are you running the silencer inserts?
Yes and yes. The drone is not as bad as I thought it was on the first ride. Still going to look at it but its way down on the list. The drone goes away and the car almost goes dead silent on the inside when the car gets above 2000RPM kinda funny but then it starts to weak up when you get higher say 3000RPM then starts to sounds good with no drone. Lots of little things to adress but first im going to get it road ready then fix the other issues.
That sounds exactly like my 5.0 Mustang GT did . . . I was expecting it to be mousey quiet, like nothing's going on under the hood at all.
That was the original plan but the lack of good cutouts made it a lets not sound like a mustang with flow masters and a B cam. I love the sound and there is no way to make a v8 sound like the 13B so this works fine for me just a generic performance sound.
It sounds good. You can get Dynamat superlite off of Ebay for an affordable price, but one of the other suggestions will probably still be cheaper. You likely won't need a ton of sound deadener, either.
