The Turbo II diff and half shafts are supposedly good for 4-500 hp, depending on who you ask, and even the N/A bits are kinda maybe good enough for a mild build. The Granny's kit also uses an off the shelf C4 driveshaft, which is nice.

You're right about the V8Roadsters kit. The bigger issue though, which is emissions legality, remains.

The uniqueness is a big selling point for me too. I want something that I can hang onto for a while and feel a bit invested in. I never really felt much for the Camaro and I want something that stirs a bit more passion. Plus, the ideal donor car pretty much fell into my hands and a swap is always something I've wanted to do.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about emissions.

Would an FR-S with a blown engine fit the budget? It is light, handles well, accepts a V-8, could be a touch more civilized than a Miata, and seems to tempt boy-racers into cranking up the boost without always addressing fuel and cooling. Might be worth a look if you want something like an FC RX-7, only newer.

I'm looking into the FR-S but I haven't seen where they have the electrical stuff down yet.
