My new to me CRX needs new shoes. It still has the stock 13" steelies with craptastic tires. I want to auto cross this thing next season and want a performance tire. It currently has 175/70-13 noisy crap on it. What tire and wheel combo can the brain trust here reccomend?
The particulars are:
1990 CRX DX completly stock except the suspension, even the exhaust is stock. 169k miles.
The car is lowered on Konis (I dont know how much, I bought it lowered) and has no clearence issues with the current tires so I would like to keep close to the same width and diameter.
I expect my learning curve will be quite steep so ultra soft compounds arent nessesary-yet
It is my daily driver and I drive 65 miles to/from work 5 days a week so I want a tire that will last a little while and not too loud. I hate loud tires.
I dont want to invest in a seperate wheel/tire combo for street and auto cross.
I would like to keep the price down as low as reasonably possible.
I can mount and balance my own tires so ordering online from two seperate places isnt an issue if the price is right.

I drive on 205/50/15 Falken Azenis year-round in the Pacific Northwest
They don't last too long though (no ST-class autocross tire will). The Falken Ziex 912 won GRM's last cheap tire test though and is a superb performer all around. I would run 14's on an Enkei (the new split-5 spoke, not the overplayed PRF01).
I put Ziex 912's on my wires Altima. So far I like them. I'm not sure I want to put 14's on it only to have trouble finding tires in future, if I have to buy wheels anyway I might as well get 15"s.

I'll third the love for Ziex 912s. They're an all-around decent performer at a very attractive price. You won't win any autocross events on them, but like you said, they won't be your limiting factor yet anyway.

There's more available now for 14's then there was last year, it's kind of nice. 205/50/15 will always be available though.
on my '91 Si I'm running 205-50-15's re11's to a-x... for the track it's 225-35-13's r888's
next yr a-x may be 225-45-15 toyo r1r's
I run shaved 205/50-15 R888's on 15x7" Drag DR21's.
I wouldn't run them daily... I would expect something like an Azenis 615K would be alright daily.
