Trying to cram an LS into the Molvo. Before I cross the point of no return in replacing the 302, I want to make sure there is an intake manifold that will fit under the stock  Volvo P1800 hood.

I found this drawing for a Holley manifold with some numbers. While this might answer my question, the price is a bit scary.

Any one seen a similar drawing for the LS1 2 or 6 manifolds?

I WANT to think that the factory parts would fit seeing as this is close to a LS Miata swap. But I like to measure stuff when possible.

Separate question: The LS 4 intake seems to have the same profile, but is not loved by the swap crowd.  Hence low $$$$. Seeing as this is going to be a stock L33 engine, any reason not to lok at the LS4 intake? Pretty sure it would support the power I am expecting.

Nook and Tranny has a good page with lots of dimensions to go by, sadly no intake specs.  But lots and lots of everything else.

LS4 are like LS2 manifolds except that they have a pinch just inside the throttle body to clear the oil pressure sender when flipped for a transverse engine.

All four manifolds you mentioned are roughly the same height - they sit a lot lower than the truck alternator - and they are all cathedral port manifolds, but the LS1/6 use a three bolt throttle body and the LS2/4 use a four bolt.  This is important because the different throttle bodies basically require different computers, 24x or 58x.  (General rule, 3 bolt uses a TAC module which needs a 24x computer, 4 bolt is controlled by the ECM which needs a 58x computer)  I'd also like to say that a lot of 3 bolt drive by wire units don't clear the truck accessory bracket.  If there's a way to run a 58x with a cable throttle and a GM computer, I don't know about it. There were no 4 bolt cable throttles.

Another fun thing is that you pretty much can't use a clutch fan with a low intake manifold, you are forced to use an electric fan.  I made it work with a 2007 Silverado water pump and a 4" fan spacer but it sucked and we took it back off.  Water pump life was cruelly short.

This is truck injectors and crossover tube on an LS1 manifold. I never measured the height difference, but this might give you some idea.

LQ4 truck motor is 20.25" from crank center to top of manifold. Now I'll see if I can find an LM7 vs LS1.

-Engine Dimensions — BD Turnkey Engines LLC      This site says truck engine is 23" crank to top...... LS1 is 15.5".....7.5" difference....not sure I believe that. I do know my LM4 was right around 24" tall from the bottom of the Corvette "bat wing" pan to the top of an LS1 intake.

I can probably pull dimensions from an LS3 intake, which seems to be the same height as the LS1/6.

In reply to DeadSkunk (Warren) :

I can believe 7.5".  The truck intakes sit that high up so the inlet tube clears the fan, whereas with the car intake, the TOP of the inlet tube would be deep in the fan.

Also, in the application where I had to swap truck for car, the difference between the two was "halfway into the windshield" vs "can stick your arm over the intake".

Thanks all. Warren, if that is the manifold from the challenge car, here in Canada it is worth about half the budget.

The measurement I am concerned about is where the throttle body bolts on.  The distance from the valley plate to the top of the throttle body. If this is something you can get Keith, it would help a lot in seeing if this is going to fit under the hood. I want to think that if the LS1 style manifolds fit under the Miata hood it should fit under the Volvo.

I have an LS1 intake in the attic. I'll pull it down and take pix and measurements for you tomorrow.

LOL...IIRC, I sold it for $125, but for $1000 CDN I'll start looking for another! With my engine set so low in the car, I can use the truck intake and leave the alternator in the stock position. Fpor budget reasons I decided not to use the LS1 intake, although it would look impressively low in there. The crank center line is only 10" off the ground.

The picture in your build thread doesn't show the intake ports on your heads....they are cathedral ports, right?

for the opportunity to provide a part for the Molvo? Yeah, I'd do that. PM incoming. 🤘🏻

Sorry, someone saved our LS2 and LS3 models in a file format that can only be opened by a piece of software we don't use anymore, and he can't remember where he put "his old computer" to find the originals. I assume it is now lost forever.

But based on how 302s fit in Miatas compared to LS engines, I think you'll be good.

I can get you a very accurate answer later tonight after the kids go to bed. I have an LS6 intake on my LR4 that I scanned a couple months ago.

Edit: Valley cover surface on the block to top of LS6 intake is ~158.4mm in poutine units or about 6.25 cheeseburger units.

Not stock ones, but the aftermarket does have several cheap chinese(I presume) versions. I've been running one on my LSe30 for a few years.

Nohome, if for whatever reason Angrys attic has swallowed his LS1 intake I have a backup.

While true, there were no engines that came with 4 bolt intakes that had the circuitry in the computer to control an IAC motor, or had available programming for it.  (I am 99% certain that all 58x engines had 4 bolt intakes and no 58x compatible computer can control an IAC)

In that respect, what you have for a crank sensor/what you are using for engine management may define what kind of manifold you need.

I've always thought that a twin turbo 2JZ would fit nicely in my 1800 but I would also need a hood scoop for the overhead cams to fit. Kind of like this would look OK. smiley

Muchas Gracias, but I believe the intake is on the way to the great white north.

Today was a great day; the mock-up block was in place with cast exhaust manifolds that fit.  What fabrication will be needed has been identified with a battle plan in place. I am off to find a set of the C5/C6 engine mounts.
