The clutch release fork on my 08 Legacy broke again. Fun! (Last time was about 5 years ago)
I haven't stripped the car down yet, but I'm assuming that the traditional Subaru scored up transmission snout /quill is playing a part in these failures.
I ordered an aftermarket snout repair kit/sleeve and oversized I.D. throwout /release bearing.
Here's the throwout bearing I received. It looks like the plastic center part that rides on the sleeve is miles off center.
Am I being too fussy? Is there some possible design reason to make it a little cocked? My gut says no, but I thought I'd ask the hive.
Flipside looks pretty OK though
It should self center, try wobbling it around in there.
Really, I wasn't aware that STOCK size throwouts are even available anymore. Even clutch sets come with the steel sleeve and the appropriate throwout. Which is great, because the only reason I've ever had to replace a clutch was because the throwout seized and the pressure plate turned into a jack-o-lantern.
Are there any companies that make a stronger aftermarket unit like they do for the twins? The clutch fork that is.
Thanks for the replies!
Pete-That off center plastic part will not move relative to the inner race of the bearing itself. I think I'm going to order another throwout bearing and see what shows up
Z31maniac- yes, there are "forged" clutch forks sold, it's actually the same part # as used in the twins. It would be cool to upgrade, but they're kind of spendy at $185 vs $22 for the OEM part. Given that the original style fork lasted 5 years and I doubt the rest of this car has an additional 5 years of life in it, I think that if I can get the throwout bearing to slide smoothly on the transmission snout that'll be more than good enough.
