Are there supposed to be any sort of "gaskets" between the upper shock mount and the chassis on the rear of an NB ? I've had an odd knocking sound coming from the rear for some time now. Sounds like suspension and it's most noticeable at very low speeds. You here the knock over every crack and ripple in the pavement. Just wondering if all the bits that are supposed to be there are.Could bad A-arm bushings be a possible culprit?

Yes, there is a mylar-type, very thin "gasket" but that can't the the cause of your problem. Check your swaybar endlinks.

There are some white plastic sheets, but I think they're for corrosion protection. They don't cause noise.

If it's a clunk every time the wheel changes direction, check the nuts and bushings at the top of the shock as well as your sway bar end links.

Everything at the top is tight. Never thought about the end links possibly being the problem. It does clunk every time the suspension changes direction, Keith. Thanks Guys.

So what ever happened with this issue? I've search most forums and couldn't find a solution. Mines on the left rear. Loudest on cold mornings when the car has been sitting for a few days. I've checked the FM upper mount bolts and shock nut, searched suspension joints and all look ok. WTF?

1995 with FM springs, sways and upper mounts, factory shocks.

Mine's on the right rear, and it is not every time the wheel changes direction, just on the hard bumps. Something's rattling back there.

Do the brakes have retaining clips for the pads on these cars? I chased a similar noise on the Celica for the better part of 6 months only to find that i had a pad rattling around.

Yes.

Right rear clunking on hard bumps - how about battery tiedowns?

Nope, battery is solid. Sounds like it's just forward of the RR wheel, though that could just be acoustics. Thanks!

I still have my clunk. Next spring maybe I'll dismantle the entire rear suspension.
