I bought my 88 GT in 1990 and owned it until 2010. Built a 3.2 engine with turbo (c. 300 bhp) and drove the heck out of it - faster in a straight line than any period non-turbo 911 and a bit of a sleeper.
Have fun! I put on Konis and sway bars but that was all it needed in terms of handling.

Does it need suspension work?
The '88 is considered the best suspension because for' 88 the suspension was revised and shares nothing with the earlier year cars. But,88 was also the last year, so,these suspension parts are "one year only" which makes them rare...more expensive if you can find them.
Brakes are unique to 1988 too, but it's worth it to have 10.75" vented rotors instead of the 9-point-something solid rotors the '84-'87 had. '88 pads and rotors are still commonly available but '88 calipers are getting harder to find.

I have unabashedly loved the Fiero since I was a kid, so it delights me to no end to see that all of a sudden the Fiero is suddenly popular

In 88 I was 16 and really wanted a Fiero Formula.
Well, how about fullfilling your dreams and getting a Fiero? I know of a super clean, low mileage 4spd GT for sale....
I'm good for now. Plus 88 ....

No turbo.....
some mistakes are easier to fix than others, thankfully
Dammit, now I'm more motivated to get mine on the road.
Is the GT that much bigger in the wheelwells? Mine has 17x9 wheels and 245 Hoosiers on already.
And brakes are so GM parts bin standard that the crap (and rare) factory ones can be tossed in favor of super cheap, off the shelf Corsica/Beretta replacements.
