this car was on the CL in pittsburgh for months it started at $2,500.00 then went to $1,500.00 last week. the only thing that caught my eye was it was located in the south hills of pittsburgh. that is where my garages are so i called about it. the man who posted it was very rude he explained it was his BIL's car who passed away and it has been a nightmare trying to sell it. he goes on to tell me....no you cant drive it home, no it has not run in many years, no i dont know anything about it. it has been in the garage for over 25 years......i could tell this guy was really at the end of his rope with dealing with CL crazies. this was tuesday and i was in MD told him i would like to look at car this weekend he said he had a lot of people coming to look at it and he would call me if did not sell........fast-forward to Saturday morning i am in pittsburgh running around looking at cars and am suppose to meet guy to look at car i go to the call log on my phone and dail a 412 area code number but wrong it is the owner of the monte carlo after about 4 minutes of talking about car i figure this out and i find out i am 5 minutes from car. i arrange to meet him......i get to garage and meet the guy i have never talked to a person so beat down from trying to sell something on CL i felt sorry for him. he open the garage and this car was sitting back in the corner you could not see the pass side or the rear of car. i did a very quick inspection and offered him $1,000.00 cash for it right then and there he said his wife would never do it but then for some reason i up it to $1,200.00 he said he would let me know and we left it at that. i left but could not stop thinking about the car so a couple hours later i called him and he said his wife said no. i could tell he was pushing hard to dump the car. i upped my offer to $1,400.00 he said he had to show the car to 4 other people that day......at 7pm he called me and said no one showed that he made the trip to the garage 4 times and none showed and they promised him they would be there.

i met him right away and paid him $1,400.00 for it. this Saturday when we move this out of garage it will be like Christmas because i have no idea what i bought either it will be the cool gift or a pair of socks from Aunt Martha

I have a feeling she is going to clean up pretty nice.

Good deal. Not in too bad of shape for its age. I always liked the 1st gen Montes.

That looks like it is going to clean up really nice. See if the motor is free if it is drain the oil add some new oil and prime it with the distributor removed.

I would then try to start it.

I would be suspicious of the gas tank and other bits but hell it is a Chevy easy and cheep to fix. As long as the body is strait and rust is at a minimum you have a winner.

I would love to see something like that as an American Iron car (done so it is still street drivable of course)

Something like this but with a little more "race"

I had two of those in my long and storied automotive history.

Both were big, heavy, comfortable, fast, reliable gas sucking pigs that hammered thru deep snow and looked great when cleaned up.

It is high on my list of Pro Touring candidates. Lowered, fat tires, an LS-6... an interior that wasn't made of 70's plastic... maybe a GTO IRS setup under the back end if I couldn't figure out the Vette transsaxle swap :)

All I need is to quit racing and find a pile of cash!

My brother's first car was a 72' Monte. Great looking cars, especially with the deep (Corvette) Chevy Rally wheels.

Great score! I hope it works out.

the headlight doors / grille / parking lights / front bumper are all 1972-specific. if the bumper hasn't been pushed up and cracked the grille, those front end parts are worth a few bucks.

it is missing rocker panel and wheel opening trim, and it's missing the monte carlo emblem from the C-pillar. probably was rusty (my '72 was rusty 25 years ago) and PO pulled trim to do some bodywork. if it was a vinyl top car, there will be rust (now bondo) at the corners of the backlight, and probably in the trunk floor as a result of the water getting in.

my first car was quite similar to this one. 350-4bbl / TH350 / red over black cloth bench interior, white vinyl top, PS PB AC and nothing else. i had it for almost 8 years and put 135k miles on it (it had 123k when i got it in '84). i will get another one someday.

Very nice those are on my list to get. There was one for sale here local but they wanted way to much for what it was.

EDIT: Oh yeah forgot about this one.

That car in turd brown with a ripped up vinyl top got me through college. I beat on that way to often with power braking burn outs. I think they were actually built on 4 door Chevelle frames if I remember correctly. That hood is a mile long.

yep, it's the 4-door / wagon chassis, 116" wheelbase versus the 2-door's 112". and that hood is the longest ever OE fitted to a Chevrolet.

i thought they were a lot heavier than a chevell 1972 chevell is 3305lbs and a monte is 3505lbs. i would have guessed it was over 4k....this is very interesting now

Seems like the last run on cheap muscle-ish cars were chevelles. These can't be far behind. I had a 72 for a couple of weeks back in the 80s. Bought it at an auction and traded it for a 67 firebird.

By current standards that's actually pretty light. So, lighten it where possible, upgrade suspension and brakes, put it engine of choice and cruise. This model, or the Gran Prix of the same vintage would be on my short list of pro-touring candidates.
