Once again, there is a problem with my cousin's car, and I there are too many hours between us for me to have a closer look at it.
He has a 2006 Passat 2.0T that is about 5k miles out of warranty. The dealer replaced the turbo bypass valve and A/C compressor and two days later, he got a Check Engine light.
He returned to the dealer. They pulled the code and said that he had a misfire in the #3 cylinder. They said that they looked inside with a scope and saw evidence of a leaking fuel injector. The verdict: $1200 to replace the one bad injector, or $1500 to replace all four, since they're already in there. Obviously, the parts aren't terribly expensive, but the math says that means an awful lot of labor hours.
I've never worked on a water cooled VW turbo. Are those injectors buried so deep that this is really such an expensive job? And should he go ahead and replace them all?
Probably. The 2.0T is a direct injection engine, so it's pretty much mounted inside the cyl head.
In reply to 16vCorey:
Parts are not cheap for that car and the injecters require special seals that need replaced every time you remove them.
They are a real pita to get too.
Give me a few minutes and I will run into the parts department and see how the squirters cost.
Has the cam been changed on that car? If not I would recomend removing the high pressure pump and inspecting the cam and pump for wear.
Ok. Injectors are 100 a piece with the seal.
I figue the labor to be around 4hrs and you may or may not be able to reuse some of the rubber seals on the intake etc.
What is the labor rate at the dealerhsip?
How many miles on the car? It may have some powertrain warranty left on it.
Was it at 55K miles or 41K miles? If 41K then it SHOULD be covered under a drivetrain provision.
