If your looking to go wheel to wheel a first gen rx-7 is hard to pass up. I'm working towards my SCCA licence so I can race spec-7 next year. they are not that bad to maintain, the worst part so far of all my track days(10 so far this year) is cracked rotors because I used hawk blues and drive the crap out of it. they will realy teach you momentum and are pretty forgiving. and they can be had fairly cheep, I have seen many built race cars going for $2500 to $3500 race ready. Ya they are alot like a miata but the rotory is so much fun.
I vote mustang...but i am biased.
