A mk can be anything as you well know, being that it denotes the generation. (Not only Escort, but GT40 as well ) The A4-mkIV thing is one of many reasons I could care less about being around VW cars or die-hard VW people anymore. Check "bagged or static low" much higher on that list though.
I get what you're saying, but an A5 would be a Mk2 Rabbit, you know?
And don't get me started on the B-chassis cars. I drive a B2, which depending on where you are is a MkII Passat or a Mk1 Quantum (well, ONLY gen) or a "Mk1" quattro or a "mk1" 4000 or a "mk2" 80...
And nobody, I mean nobody, says MkII Passat, they say Type 32b.
And that Audi A4, is that a B5 or a B6 or a B7, etc. (And then the B3, I think, Passat was a biggiesized A-chassis and not related at all to the B3 Audis, because it wouldn't be VWAG without goofy exceptions...)

So tell me 78 Scirocco vs 84 Scirocco. Both are really A1 cars but the 78 is a mkI scirocco and the 84 is a mkII, no?
Edit: BTW, not trying to get in a pissing match with you, its just so annoying hearing the jackass stance crowd VW people getting all uppity about the "correct" nomenclature for watercooled VWs. Calling an A1 a mkI was the way of doing things in the 90s. Now, calling it an A(X) is the way of showing someone you know more about VWs(the pissing match). Its just annoying and a good example of why the current VW crowd has ruined the car for me.
Sciroccos are a different story, yep. But then, Sciroccos are special cars.
I don't see it as a know more/know less kind of thing, just a generational thing. Everybody has their own accents, you know?
I don't really care for the VW community because I'm not obsessed with fender gap or buffalo hide radiator hoses or whatever. I get my VW info from stage rally guys.
