fun video!
i have long been taunted by British auto journalists with their overly enthusiastic praise of Purr-Jo hot hatches, i've read so many articles of glowing praise which has elevated it my mind to legend status, so appealing with basic rawness, featherweight, & nat asp purity.
i really need to drive one and experience them for myself, i sorta fear a never meet your heroes moment, but ultimately i think i'd be enthralled in deep love because they seem to have created the perfect formula.
Yeah, same thoughts here. Well said.
We got NONE of them here. I think you could get a 405 Mi16, also elevated to the stars in my mind. Super rare though.
This thread got me shopping FBMP and heavily interested in a (large for "hot hatch") X3 with a 6speed manual, AWD, and cinnamon interior for close to challenge price.
lowering springs look to be cheap, and make it look pretty hot.
I just realized all I want is a cheap fast light car that I can bang off the rev limiter everywhere I go.
drop kids off at school. Off revlimiter.
go to church, rev limiter.
drive thru food, Say it with me. Rev limiter.

You need to find a nice 8G civic SI sedan. K20, 6 Speed, LSD. Perfect. Hitting the rev limiter on a screaming NA motor is fun.
In reply to classicJackets (FS) :
Do it. I can't imagine they're not fun to drive.
There's a clean one local.. but it's at a "boutique" dealer for about 3x too much.

assuming it doesn't suck I think it'll come home with me. Ozone generator if it smells smoky.
Turns out these are wider than tall as delivered!

I like it. Manual SUVs aren't wanted by many of us. Lemme know how it goes, one way or the other!

the srt4 or gobs was about as close as the americas got for a "murican" hot hatch.
im a 45 year old yobo, come at me.
Challenge accepted - let's see if I can do better with American hot hatches.
Cosworth Vega:
Shelby GLHS:
Ford Focus SVT:
Buick Skyhawk T-Type:
OK, some are more fastback than than the more blocky hot hatches, but the rear glass lifts on all of them.

8G --- is that the FN1/2 hatch version we never got?
i've always liked the way they looked (unsure about triangle exhaust tho) because a bit of Frenchiness to my eye, but apparently they have been maligned & unliked, looks fun enough tho...
...back when i was in car-buy mode i did have an ep3 hatch on my list but never found one and the few i saw scattered far away from me were max thrashed, so never even got to test drive one. i actually like the Alfaesque shifter position which was a historical throwback nod to N600, but i have read numerous reports of the steering feel to be extremely numbvague --- anybody here with realworld ep3 hatch driving & can add input of personal experience?

They certainly are. Drooled over this one at a Donuts and Drip meet here in Portland:

There appears to be 7 manual inline-six BMW X3 for sale nationwide (via cargurus)
In reply to OHSCrifle :
Yeah, I bought it this morning! Need to get back and pick it up/bring it home tonight or tomorrow but I have the title and key.
not perfect but was decent and cheap

Looks like my attempt to write glhs was autocorrected to "gobs".
The svt focus ok. But the other ones are a stretch and I've spent plenty of time with a cosworth Vega.
more MINI!
here's a GP1 which has been modded a bit and this guy gives an interesting review --- it has an unspecified CatCam but it's most likely the aggro 469 which is top-end profiled...
...and another sidetrack, it's also fitted with a CAE shifter --- i have long contemplated these because people say they add great rifle-bolt precision & make it even more fun to row thru the gears, altho with a less mentioned caveat of being quite stiff for street use
i have avoided because i'm not too keen on how they look in a daily driver plus you must cut up the console for it to fit, plus the cost of course which is mucho moolah for a shifter, so anybody here have experience with a CAE/Coolerworx/Revin or similar style of this shifter design who can weigh in on merits and/or drawbacks? if so, what say you?
In reply to Fueled by Caffeine :
You could get this in the 70s with the 3.8L Buick V6 and a 5-speed. They were reasonably quick and surprisingly fun to drive.
Finding one now that hasn't been gutted, tubbed, and had a big block stuffed in the front is almost impossible.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Beat me to it sir! I missed a really reasonably priced one in Canada last year. Think it was like 22K CAD so under 20K USD at that point. Just really feel like they made a point of making a nasty hatch that wasn't useful, but was awesome.

Shelby GLHS:
The GLHS is definitive proof that Americans can indeed make a hot hatch. It checks every box you can think of.
Friend of mine's family had the normal version with a 2.2 in it (I think). I kept trying to convince him to take the bumpers off so it would look cool.
