Yeah, the cheap, low-end Frams aren't exactly worth much. There's definitely better filters out there for the same price.
The Purolator tearing thing started a year or 2 ago. There's a bunch of stuff on Bobistheoilguy about it. It doesn't seem to affect the synthetic media filters though, just the Puro classics and pureones (and some others made by Puro).
She'l Rotella 5w40 is like Frank's red hot sauce, I put that E36 M3 in everything that doesn't ask for 5w20 or 0w20
