I finally went out and bought a new daily driver (new to me anyway). After looking at more than a few BMW's and WRX's I broke down and picked up a G35. It's not the most inspired driver out there, but has a few good points. It has a fair amount of aftermarket support since it shares a lot of goodness with the 350Z, and it's an absolute rocket in a straight line. In fact, except for the new M3 that I couldn't afford, it's the fastest car I tested power-wise.
Better shocks and tires will help out on the handling, but it's not horrible, and besides, I have play cars for the rest. It should however handle the day to day work issues fine without a lot of headaches, and I won't be tempted to take it to a track day. Sometimes you just need a tool.
It is however a nice looking car...man am I getting old....
Man, your definition of "boring" certainly differs from mine! Nice car!
When I needed a boring DD, I got a TDI Golf.....
I have to say, having an appliance borders on the best automotive decisions I've made in years. I'm starting to ENJOY working on cars again, and like the mundane, comfortable efficiency that is the TDI.
not that boring, dude. i'd probably take a G35 over most BMWs...at least you can still check your own oil, and it will age like a japanese car.
The 3 nissan products that I have owned were all wonderful cars and certainly an Infiniti version should be that much nicer. I think a G35 is a great choice!
Not boring, especially in coupe form, but even in sedan form not boring. Nice cars. Nice engine. I like them better than the 350Z.
wow, when i saw the title to the thread, i was thinking a Volvo 240 or Toyota Corolla, man was i wrong! Haha, G35s are nice cars!
My dad has driven a G35 sedan for 7 years. He bought it new and it has been great. He is approaching 140,000 miles and the only things that he has had to replace are brakes and tires. If you shift into 6th gear too fast the synchronizer has a hard time and you hear a small crunch, shift slow and no problem. This car will likely be for sale within the year.
Thanks! I should have said that it is the sedan version, but I really like it so far! Of course of all the cars that I've owned, this is only like number 4 or 5 that has had more than 2 doors. Compared to the Miata that I've been driving daily for the last couple of years it feels really big though! Of all the toys that it has, the audio controls on the steering wheel has to be my favorite! Who knew? Now all I need to do is decide what shocks to use. Do I go ahead and spring for the Konis, or go a little milder? I wish they made the FSD's for this car.
I just got a 04 G35 to replace my Miata as well. Mine is a AWD auto sedan. I like the car, but don't love it. I coudn't find a 6 speed with under 75k miles in the same price range or I would have bought one.
I plan to keep it a year or so and I definetly will consider a 07/-08 G35 to replace it. I need to fit 2 babyseats in it.
The stock exhaust on the ting is loud. Like the borla in my old miata loud. I wonder if there could be anythin broken internaly in the muffler.

When I saw the title, I though Oh, No. Someone's bought a 1990s Oldsmobile hen house. Nice score. That's cool.

Can't say I tried the Koni's on my coupe, but a good set of sway bars like Hotchkis for ~$300 goes a long way toward taming the body roll in the G. Good bang for the buck.
I ran single adjustable Tokico's, they were O.K. as single adjustable shocks (both compression/rebound on one adjuster). The rear adjusters came with cable extensions that located the knobs in the child latch housings on the rear parcel shelf. Kinda trick and they worked pretty well.

You can barely hear the exhaust on mine, so might be a muffler issue. There is a bit of intake noise from the motor though. We have a grandson that is a year old now so the need to move to a 4-door was becoming an issue. I held out as long as I could!
Mine is also an auto, which I really don't mind in this kind of car. For the price, it was hard to pass up.
I must say, the 6-spd G35 sedan was a lot more fun than I expected.
I can't say that I'd call a G35 a boring car, either.
G35s have an awesome engine note!

Yeah not sure about boring with that one. I had a Geo Prism once upon a time...
I wish my boring was the same as your boring. My boring DD is a 2003 Toyota Echo.
If that is boring, what is my DD? My DD is a big fat 4door sedan. 02 Intrepid that is a former taxi.
OK, maybe boring wasn't the right word, but my last few daily drivers have been a Miata, 944 Turbo, and an MR2 Turbo, so in that sense, it's very different. I tell everyone it's my mid-life crisis car!
And it does have an awesome engine note; sounds like a V8.
This did get me thinking though about the most boring car I've ever owned. Most cars have something good about them, but it would have to be the Grand Cherokee. Not really a car, but extremely boring!

Boring DDs fall under the heading of "driving slow cars fast". And for that, they are wonderful.
That said, you did not really buy a boring DD; way too much horse power and financial/emotional attachments from what I read in your post. As soon s you mention mods to the original formula, you leave the arena of boring DD. You might even wash it on occasion and that voids the concept.
A boring DD would be a Toyota Corolla or Camry, so that you could focus the disposable income on the piles of junk in the garage that really make you happy.
Friend of mine has a twin turbo G35. It's a pig. A pig with a rocket engine duck taped to it's back.
I just picked up a 2006 Sport Coupe. I love the car but........... I came from an E36 M3 and went to the G35 for the reliability and was a little disappointed with the quality (having never owned a Japanese car before). I hate the clutch and seat belt.......... but love driving with the sun roof and window open to hear the exhaust......... and it is fast as snots!! I think I'll keep it!

Aaaaand, the G35 coupe moves back on my radar for a future DD. Earnest thanks for the reminder.
