Ok, lets say you were going to take a long road trip, something like BABE rally perhaps. But unlike BABE rally you needed to be fairly confident in your ride, something with good reliability.
But, also something, that if necessary could be a) sold quick with minimal loss at the end of the trip or b) bought cheap enough that you wouldn't care too much about scrapping it.
Should be large enough to haul luggage and supplies for 2 people.
Should not be a complete embarrassment as it would be used in an "official" capacity.
Decent fuel economy would be helpful, 30+ would be ideal.
Lets say max price $2000
Give me ideas.
There is a car that starts with M that comes to mind...

Thanks, should have mentioned I dont need actual examples, I wont need this vehicle until next summer (2014) just getting some ideas of what to keep a look out for.
If I buy something too early I will either sell it off long in advance or grow attached to it which would defeat the ability to sell it on quick or ditch it at the end of the drive.
2 grand should get you a decent enough Hyundai tib (1st or 2nd gen) Accent, or even an elantra.
2nd-gen probe gt
any saturn from about 2002 back

I was going to say Escort wagon, since you can easily swap in a 5spd for the slutomatic abortion Ford put in there....

This. Should come in $1000 under budget very easily

This, and I even have one to sell you that's in your budget.
I want the KLZE MX-3 that's in the classifieds.
I know you're not actually buying... but i'd think this would hit the req's and luggage and stuff excellent.

An attractive option. How's the highway economy on those? Think if I decide to ditch it at the end of the "trip" I could get a quick sale out in the southwest?

Yeah, something like that would fit the bill nicely.

You laugh, but I'm sure a Biturbo meets 5 out of 7 of his requirements. How bad can it be?

Not a chance in hell. This car has to finish the trip, on time, no stops for emergency repairs. Looking at about 1500 miles through the southwest in the summertime, it's gonna be hard on a car....and driver.
And if I could find the magical <$2000 bi-turbo that was THAT reliable it would fail the "don't mind abandoning it at the end" test.

Southwest is big into slab sided car culture. You'd be able to dump a big body ford in no time.

MIATA!
Fails on the people and luggage capacity, and the ability to ditch it at the end if needed. Also having done 50% of BABE rallies in drop tops I can honestly say I don't like road tripping in the summer heat in a convertible. Give me a tin top and A/C please.
I missed Miata because I guess I thought you were inferring Mercury as in use the Colony Park, which I'd love to do because it rocks on road trips, but at 13mpg it would not be cost effective and I'd definitely have to drive it back home.
