Late 80's early 90's in the UK there was a popular top end club racing series known as Thundersaloons (translation Thundersedanss !!) that was basicaly a silhoutte formula. It gave rise to wacky cars like that beetle and Porsche 962 engined Ford Sierra cosworth's etc
