Painting a car at home

I know very little about painting cars. But I saw this in an autotrader my Dad gave me last night.

I used some Discontinued single stage Kirker Porsche Guards red to paint my challenge car. With primer, paint, filler, and fiberglass I have about $151.38 into the paint job. It’s been almost 4 years since I’ve painted the car and its holding up well.

Now that is pretty!

I used marine grade oil based enamel and a roller on the Goldwing.

My CRX is Rustoleum Enamel.

Can't kill it! And most people can't believe it was a DIY job. I spent about $75 and 3 days of prepping, taping and then wet sanding.

my question for you is, how much prep/what kind of prep.. ? my CRX is black and I'd love for it to be some color that was a little more sun friendly since nearly all my return trips are west with no a/c ....
did you sand down to bare metal / just scuff it up / prime it.. etc.. ?

Rustoleum Pro is some good stuff. Just scuff it up with 320-ish, wipe it all down with Paint Thinner (Made with Mineral Spirits) and shoot it. I experimented with bare aluminum panels and that's the secret. No primer is needed. Works over old paint too. Just make sure your surface is smooth, as what's under will show. So if you have a paint chip off, that will show afterwards.
