Last night my wife and I were watching the season finale of "The Americans" and there was a red classic 900 in one of the opening scenes. Saabs are everywhere!

I love this one, bit extreme for street use though

Yes, the Factory. It rolled of the line that way. The factory used the 2 door Notchbacks for rally cars both in 99 and 900 guise. It astounds me that this county embraced the hatchback over the notchback given that America generally relates hatchbacks with economy or first cars. The Toyota Celica is a perfect example of that. The Notch is so mindnumbingly ugly, yet they were more common than the really pretty hatch.

Notchbacks

A few shots from some of the Rallys we've done in the '63 Bullnose. As of 2014 we had tripled the original horsepower. This year we built an engine with even more power.

This should be a familiar carb to some of you. Had to go big.

This guy has a bunch of 96's and 97's . My 1965 Special (Monte Carlo running gear in a stock sedan body) as one of the most fun cars I have owned. Esp. after I got hold of the factory modification manual.

Where did this "bull nose" thing come from ?

Bullnose refers to the short, stubby front ends on model 93s and early 96s. They have a distinctive grill shape and the radiator is located behind the engine. An engine fan is driven off a jackshaft.

Now on our rally car, despite all the experts saying it wouldn't fit, we swapped to a later, more robust two stroke engine that has accessories that stick forward into the grill and no jackshaft for the fan. So we switched to an electric fan.

Later non-bullnose front end.

Bullnose front end.

Bullnose you say?

I always liked the Saabs but never Really wanted one until they were extinct. It would be a Saabaru turbo wagon if it ever materialized. Yes I realize it isn't a real Saab due to having an ignition in the normal location...

I've been the proud owner of Fast Freddy for the past few months. 1968 Sonett II V4 that has been in the family for about 30 years. Bought it from my brother, who bought it from Pops about 15 years ago. Originally owned by Fred Champion who ran it at hillclimbs in NorCal and Oregon for many years, hence Fast Freddy.

Hot rod 1700cc industrial engine, built trans, suspensions, cooling system etc. Pops built the front bumper/valence assembly years ago, and modified a crashed hood assembly. Fun little guy. I've since built coil-over setup, a new exhaust, and fit a new interior.

cool looking little Sonett.. I need to ask though, how often do people think it is a kit car?

The 96 was longer because the radiator as put in front of the engine for better cooling. It No longer had the overhead fanshaft of the 93.

Worked for a SAAB dealer way back in the late '60's.

Had a '65 96 Special Sedan. Later to receive a 940 engine.

Good old you-tube video, since my saab searches today brought me back to this thread!

Looks like these guys race some SAABs, and may be pretty successful. I THINK they are doing chump races but can't quite be sure.

Anyone on here? or know any of these guys? Out of PA it looks like.

My two sisters and me, too many years ago to remember. My Dad was one of the first, if not the first SAAB dealer in the US. I still have a sales award he won in the 60's and a metal Draken jet model from 1959. Two cycle exhaust smell, anyone?
