So I pulled the engine out of my 75 Vette to replace it with an LT1. (Currently on standby)
I figured an old L48 would be useless for the Astro van I'm building for the soccer mom challenge. But upon further inspection it is a GM crate motor of unknown age. It's a 350 built in Mexico. I intend to refresh the heads, clean up the bottom end, and reinstall the edelbrock manifold that came on the car when I purchased it. I added a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb years ago and will use that as well. Value? Check out my build thread, Jean Clyde Dam Van for more info and pics.
Thanks,
George
I 'd say around 500 when its done. Add in for any e tra parts you by like exhaust manifolds/headers, fuel pressure regulator etc. Those early crate 350s were
around 250hp and $1800 as long blocks.
Running gen1 SBC 350 is probably $250 unless you're Andrew Nelson. Then, it's $1.38. So the real question is: are you Andrew Nelson?
In reply to AngryCorvair:
Nope, not him!
So $250 as is pulled from my old car?
Including the edelbrock intake and carb that was on it when pulled?
Or maybe $350 as a package deal?
Obviously, parts needed to rebuild or refresh would be added into the total.
Anything else to consider?
Quit trying to give away your money. Key words .."They were on it when I bought it".
FMV - i once picked up a good running 350 with an edelbrock performer intake and carb for $300. i'll support a $300 value. i've also been given a running 350 with same intake/carb for free just because i stopped to pick up a rear axle with a free sign on it. "hey take this too"
andrew's challenge 350 might be $1.38, but mine was $0. recoup whole price of donor is a wonderful thing.

Agreed, but trying to consider fair market value if I had sold the parts instead. Don't want to be wrong and go over budget.
BTW, I installed the Edelbrock carb on the Vette about 7 years ago.

Our challenge engines have ranged from $560+ to $970. But they have all been pieced together from flea market parts and have not been purchased as a running units.
Thanks all. Gonna go with a $300 valuation before refresh.

ROFL... Seriously, $300 is probably a very fair (if not high) value for a SBC "core". I don't think anyone is going to look twice at that budget item.
Also, maybe someone can provide some clarity on this, but if you could use the engine in its current condition, but choose to swap out like for like gasket/bearings (No machine work) it is no cost. I remember a conversation along these lines at the last challenge... i.e. did the car come with oil? Did the can come with brake fluid?
It seems like consumables would be consumables. Of course I'm sure I just kicked a hornets nest
I'd love to find a good sbc for 300. Cheapest I can get a runner here is 400.
gaskets and bearings are not consumables. oil and fluids are. big difference. "refreshing" is a budget knock if you use purchased parts. using your new $60 ball hone to clean up the cylinders isn't because you bought a tool not a part. having experienced the challenge, there was only one team i expected was lying about budget stuff, and their car didn't do crap anyway. everyone else seems legit, and "new rings/bearings/gaskets while i'm in here" without putting the parts in the budget is against the spirit of the event. you all know who won last year. he called me one night from the garage while trying to clean an old used piston to get his engine back together. he could have just as easily called (summit, jegs, speedway) and had new forged pistons shipped out because nobody would know what's inside the bores, but in the true spirit of the event he was not about to fudge anything and lie to win.
it's not an untested craigslist "core" either, it's the same thing as if he went to somewhere, heard and saw it run fine, and then paid and had it pulled. not "i promise it runs great" and gets it home, installs it and it has a rod knock(been there, have a 350 on the stand now that was like that).
CL ATL. type Chevy engine in search bar. Yesterday at the Swap Meet a 302 ford new built with good Factory heads 400.00(complete) but you know these things there IS a good looking 440 and a 340 on cl here, I know you like them.

$200 would be very fair in my area.
oh yeah, i just posted a free 350 roller cam engine with a rod knock in the classifieds for $free
In reply to vwcorvette:
The 327 is $350 overpriced.
Bingo.
Not as many options here in Vermont for comparison. I think I'm being reasonable. Andy, your opinion is highly regarded though I've never met you. I am satisfied I'm meeting the intent of the rules. Besides I don't expect to win. I want a good reliable set up that I can also use to tow my GTI.

the other day the Question was would the SCCA Capri for 700.00 bucks be legal at the challange, Heck I see it as good for the under 1000.00 too!. FORMER Race car, not much else you can do with it. But for 5 grand it could run good and look current, as a race car.
