Has anyone here been running a Quaife for any amount of time?  Wondering if anyone else has noticed a surprising amount of slack in their Quaife?  If so, have you ever measured the amount of slack from wheel-to-wheel?  I’m not talking about backlash in the final drive gear, this slack seems to be inside the differential.

I have one in my car, and have for a while (8 yrs or so).  While fiddling around with some things on Saturday, with the car on a lift, I noticed some unhappy-sounding gear slack noises coming from the diff when I would rotate one wheel back and forth.  I still need to actually measure how many degrees I can turn one wheel with the other locked in place, but by eye it was a lot more than I expected.  The thing is, I honestly don’t know if this noise & slack is new or has always been there since new…

The diff doesn’t seem to make any weird noises while driving.  It still works fine… on Sunday I drove an hour, autocrossed all day (including 13 two-step launches), and drove home without issue.  I would probably notice any bad noises easily through my very rigid transmission mounts (Fwd car).

Any ideas would be appreciated.  I have some new gear oil on order, my next step is to drain the gearbox and make sure there are no chunks or shavings floating around in there.  Shifting seems 100% normal, so I’m not expecting to find much.  Unfortunately I bought the diff second hand (but new, never installed) so I don’t technically have access to Quaife’s lifetime warranty/support…

Trans in gear or neutral?

Might be hard to measure the wheel to wheel when everything is assembled (i.e. how do you hold the diff carrier steady? If you put the car in gear that will "hold" it, but now you are really measuring the backlash of many other gears all added together.

If the trans is in neutral, shouldn't it be effectively open since you are applying very little torque to one side?

Warning: I have never owned a quaife, only theoretically think about them.
