Looks like I let the brakes on the wife's Solara go a leetle bit too long before renewing them. The right front rotor is starting score. Before last night, they never made a sound in protest. Is it even worth trying to get them turned? In the past I have tried to use Brembo rotors, but I'm not sure they are as good as they once were. Who makes a quality rotor and what is the best source? Also, what brake pads have you had good experience with. I must say, I have no complaints with the OEM stuff on the car, but the local toyota dealer doesn't even use KY when he gives you the old in and out.

For stock replacement I use carquest brake parts. The redbox pads they use work great for cheap. Better quality than the other suppliers I've used and usually cheaper.

Among the manufacturers of cheap brakes, Centric makes good quality stuff.

I've used lots of bargain-bin semi-metallic pads that were decent in terms of performance, but they're probably harder on the rotors than stock. Axxis makes good performance pads on the cheapish side.

I don't think it is worth trying to get rotors turned, I dragged a pair all over town trying to get them turned. Finally got pissed off and ordered a new pair. The machine work is so expensive it costs like 50% of new rotors and you have to find a place to do it and drag those damn heavy things all over the place. That's what I know.

Yeah if I had access to cheap, quickly available rotors I'd never consider getting them turned.

I get the Napa brand rotors. I used them on the Miata for autocrossing. No issues, super cheap.

This. Cheap rotors, good pads and call it a day.

Yes, would add that I didn't go too crazy on pads, but not bottom of the barrel.

Not sure what year the Solara is, but I checked for a 2006 on the Napa site and it's around $30 + $30 = $60 for front + rear rotors for the Napa rotors.

Napa rotors for sure.

I have no idea why they are better, but they are. They are the only rotors we run on our 87 RX7 track car.

I use Raybestos "advanced technology" series rotors and pads on my friends cars when asked what that noise is and used the same on my old Vue. I have actually been pretty surprised at the quality of them.

My car gets EBCs but it's a different application.

I use the cheapest non-drilled/slotted rotors i can possibly find on everything.

Centrics and Brembos are still some of the better rotors that I've used. The Napa brand is pretty good too. I tested all on track in my Spec Miata. The Centrics and Brembos wear better in race usage IME. I think there was a bad batch of Centrics a year or two ago that warped readily on both the SM and the wife's Mini but I had used them for ages w/o issue before that.

I usually check out RockAuto to see if they have any line of rotors on close out. A couple of months ago I had a car that was making a noise. I determined that the noise was coming from the rear rotors, they were so rusty that they were rubbing on the pads making noise all the time. This car wasn't driven much. I found a set of close out rotors at RockAuto that were grooved and plated for like $10 each Sold! With a new set of pads for less then $20, plus shipping and their 5% discount and I just did a rear brake job on the car for $50.

like everyone else, Brembo now makes at least some of their rotors in china. i was disappointed to find that out when i ordered fronts and rears for mama's Ody a few years ago. Fronts were made in italy, rears were made in china. i've always been happy with the quality and longevity of the brembo rotors.

I'll add to the list.

I have had very good service from NAPA rotors.

NAPA is great.

When considering rotors, many suppliers publish weight. Some cheap ones are also lighter/thinner, some substantially.

I've been very happy with the cheap whole car kit from Rock Auto "power stop brand" I got the cheapest rotors with pads kit and wow there great. awesome bite on initial cold push of the pedal and don't seem to fade even in city gas / panic brake Boston driving.

Napa has good rotors for $30 and el supremo for $60. Worth the money?

I use Centric premiums on all of our DDs, RockAuto ususally has the best prices on them once you factor in shipping.

they have a coating on them that keeps everything except the pad-mating surface from rusting. The brake rep told me it wouldn't burn off. It took my miata about 500 miles to prove him wrong.

The other thing the brake rep told me is that the metal used is from the middle of a batch, not the beginning or the end, for better consistency. idk about that.

the one thing I can attest to is that the maximum run-out is half as much as their standard rotors. .002 instead of .004

Napa rotors are pretty good. Those with some decent pads and you should be set.

Sorry if some one has posted this but I have had great luck with stuff from Amazone. Last set of rotors for the Porsche were $27 each to my door and they were / are a quality OE replacement. Don't remember the brand off hand.
