Back Story: My son just started racing kids champ karts at a local track. Long story short I failed him, and we had some breakage on our kart preventing him from racing. I was heartbroken.

Then another family approached us and said their daughter didn't want to race in the final race, and that my son could drive there kart if they wanted. Awsome! In explaining how we had to start this kart, we explained he had to be on the brake while feather the gas to get going. He misunderstood our less than clear directions and took it to mean to stay the brake the whole race......oooof. Incredibly he still was able to get into first place, with about 2 laps to go and the clutch let go. Totally shattered.

Now this other family wouldn't here of me replacing the clutch....but that doesn't set well with me. We broke, we should at the very least provide a replacement clutch, and some beer for the dad's labor. Except the gentlemen wouldn't tell me what kind of clutch it was.

Can you help me figure out the right one to buy....or a good one to buy. I believe it was a disc clutch. It had a bronze colored housing. It looked like it was vented. By the way it shattered it looked like it could be aluminum. This would go on a flathead. Cost isn't an issue for me. I want to replace it, but don't want to get them something useless or cheap quality. I'm trying figure out what it is so I can fed ex it right off as I know they have a race on saturday.

It might be a Tomar clutch, disc clutches are typically $300+.the priced.

I have a Dry Clutch that I am selling for $100 with the tool if you are interested.

Karts used to be so simple. Clutches were simple centrifugal. Hardly ever failed and you could change the engagement speed by changing a spring.

Ah progress.

In reply to iceracer: That's what we have on ours. Works great. Friend discouraged me from the disc clutch for ours, as beginners tend to be a little rough on them.

They still are in many classes. Most without adjustment at all. Just install and go. The newer motor packages (Rotax, ROK) use a standard clutch. It's the older classes that use the adjustable ones.

Crisis averted. Turns out the gentleman's brother actually sells the clutches.....I called the brother to figure out if he knew what clutch it was. Made an arrangement with the brother to make sure the clutch is replaced. So that ended up being easier than I thought....not any cheaper, but at least easier. It was an SMC vortex clutch.

If you insist on buying new, Danny Martin at Martinsbuilt Clutches or Shannon Hulbert, (Kart Tech on Facebook) or Donny Nall at CKI in Midway, NC are the ones to go to. Make sure you get at least a Two Disc/Six Spring. See if your friend will tell you where the Clutch is eet to kick in and what Driver he's running. Danny Martin will sell you a clucth set up and ready to go.
