When I say "stock engine" specifically it's the long block, manifolds, etc are generally changed once we go forced induction for things that actually work well.

Enough engine builders have pointed out that engines usually make more power on a bore's second set of rings that it makes me understand that "stock block" makes more power because someone didn't ruin the bore with a hone.
A good vs. bad hone job can be 20-40ft-lb difference to rotate the bottom end!

the idea is an untouched engine. As it came out of the junkyard or donor vehicle. Well except for boost and maybe cams.

"We" did this back in the 90's with 5.0 fords... until the block split at 550-600 rwhp.

Wow, that much?
I have seen as little as 450 crank horsepower, cast pistons and all.

If I take the head off I will make sure the bores aren't ovaled, and send it. If the compression is low and leakdown is a little high, it's about perfect. When you need two -12an vent lines and it's puffing some smoke it's about right

Any truth to the idea that if the head isn't leaking, original head gasket is better than a replacement?

Good to know. Does the Ford 5. 0 with the DOHC do the same thing?
No, the 5.0 DOHC is based on the 4.6 / Modular architecture. So it's a totally different engine than the old 302 / 5.0 small block.
