Was very popular back in the day. The Fiats were rear engine rear drive as well and it was much easier to get parts to make power out of a VW engine than the Fiat motors.

I am going to hope it was because the entire underside of the car was rusted away, that and drag racing isn't exactly handling critical so a Bug beam is just fine.
The little giant killer used the stock front suspension from the 600 but used the Bug rear bits.
Darrell Vittone's 850 used the Fiat rear suspension mated to VW axles and a custom straight axle up front based on bug torsion springs in a custom tube.
