The really interesting part though is that the sport compact aftermarket was just getting started, and there really wasn't a ton of stuff out there yet. Jackson Racing was the big player at the time. They had a really slick, almost magazine quailty catalog, but even they didn't have a ton of stuff yet. I may even still have their 1989 catalog around somewhere, but I think they probably had shocks, sway bars, plus a cam and header package, and a catback muffler. That was about it. The rest of the catalog was more generic stuff like BBS wheels and Momo steering wheels and shift knobs.

If you happen across that catalog, I would love to see some pictures of it! I have been a big fan of the Jacksons since reading an article on one of the big magazines, R&T or C&D, about them testing a V8 Mustang on PCH and trying to catch up to a little 1G Honda Civic ... they couldn't but caught up with it around Malibu after it pulled over. It was Oscar in one of his modded Civics.

I was lucky to meet both Oscar Sr and Jr in California after calling them when my supercharger broke somewhere in Colorado. They told me to swing by their place in California and that they would get me sorted out. Got there late and after fixing the car they took my wife and I to In and Out after my wife mentioned she had never been. Followed them on their supercharged Miata.

I bought a Mugen steering wheel and hub adapter from the display case at the Honda dealership. The parts manager didn't even have a price for it, so I just offered him $75 for everything that said Mugen on it, and he said OK.

I think I paid over $600 for a Mugen wheel and hub for my S2000 back in 2007!

I still have the wheel hanging on the wall of my garage, but it has two broken spokes and I had to recover the leather twice. I sold the hub, leather pad (never used it), and the Mugen Power horn button. I should have kept the horn button.

These are similar to the Honda Element: nothing like it before or since.

That article with the NX2000 brings back some memories for me.  I couldn't afford a fun Honda around the turn of the century but a fun cheap Nissan NX was within my reach as a 16 year old.  Mine was black like the one in the pictures.  It wasn't as fast as a modified Honda of the day but I loved driving around in it.  Years later I found an Integra and enjoyed it for nearly a decade too.
